Hi,

I have a Dell XPS 15Z (L511z) with a 2nd gen i7 CPU. I want to upgrade it to a i7 3rd gen CPU.

The laptop is currently running bios version A05 but version A12 is available.

Can I upgrade the CPU to a 3rd gen i7? Will I need to update the bios, and if so, to which version do you recommend.

Solution
The processor in that model dell coes in either PGA or BGA versions. BGA versions are soldered onto the motherboard. That is typical for ultr-thin devices such as your laptop. Check if you can determine whether you have a BGA socket type. If the answer is "yes", then the answer to your question is "no". Unless you have considerable technical expertise in reflowing solder.
