Firstly i should tell you that I'm aware there are newer cpus/apus than AMD A6 or Athlon X4 760k. But i don't play games, I use it to watch 1080p or higher resolution films , run Photoshop and basic video editing ( for tiktok and youtube etc).

What i have now is:

AMD A6-5400k processor
MSI A78-G41 motherboard
GTX 660 2GB GPU
12GB RAM
350w PSU

Now i noticed that in aliexpress you can buy an thlon X4 760k for around 3 USD

What do you guys think ? Will that give me a significant improvement ?

Aliexpress is always a risky place to try to buy stuff. If those are used chips maybe its ok but intel does not tend to manufacture for long after they end of life a processor. Chips manufactured without intel approval you never really know.

I guess for $3 it is not much risk, it likely will not damage your motherboard. Will your current cooler work on the new cpu. Your current cpu also has a embedded GPU and the new one does not if that is important to you.

When you talk old equipment like this I forget how things used to be done. Most stuff related to video such as rendering or encoding/decoding is now assisted by the video card. The CPU is not as important but years ago they used to do most the processing on the CPU chip.
Not sure when they changed over.

OP

if you're buying from Aliexpress, I recommend Tai Yuan store. Check if they have the cpu you want. It's the store where my 2600K and Q9500 came from, which work well up to this day.

yeah, encoding today are helped by the gpu. I use Nvenc function of Handbrake, so the gpu is there to assist with the encoding. This way, even my pc with weak cpu can encode large file with no problem.
