Upgrading Enermax 1000w galaxy?

Hi All

I am thinking of upgrading my enermax 1000w galaxy to a fully modular PSU.

I was drawn to the Corsair AX1200i which is way more than I need but closet to the 1000w I found I believe. I am not sure if I could get away with the AX860i.

I current have the following setup drawing power:
i5 2600k
8GB RAM CML8GX3M2A1600C9 LP
3x 140 case fans
1x H100i (2x 120fans)
2x GTX 580 (SLI)
1x Creative Sound Blaster ZxR
5x Sata HD (1TB / 500MB)
1x DVD drive

I am currently overclocking the CPU by a small amount from 3.3GHz to 4GHz. I hope to work out how to overclock to 4.5 or more at some stage but not got there yet.

I know that the 580's are power hungry which is why I am not sure if I can get away with the AX860i with the number of HD I have.

In a few years I wish to upgrade my GFX (first single and then SLI again) and may be add/replace my HD with a few SSDs.

My question is is it worth changing my 1000W power supply? Or if I do change to a fully modular PSU can I get away with an AX860i or would I need the AX1200i. Also if not a corsair then what other PSU?

On your average system the card requires you to have a 650 Watt power supply unit.

A second card requires you to add another 250 Watts. You need a 900+ Watt power supply unit if you use it in a high-end system (1 KiloWatt recommended if you plan on any overclocking).

So I think there's no need to replace the PSU that you currently have.

Many thanks for the reply. Thanks for the clarification and I guess if I were to upgrade I would not be able use the AX860i would need at least AX1200i.

I was only thinking of upgrading for the following reasons:
1) Better performance i.e efficient PSU
2) Modular so I only connect the required cables needed.
3) Better PSU cooling. i.e does not run so hot

As you said I would not need to as my current PSU is good enough but the above points was what made me think about a new PSU.

Yes you can replace the current one anytime, if you feel for the above mentioned reasons. But go with decent ones like XFX, Corsair, Seasonic.
