Upgrading entire system except SSD and HDD, windows reinstall?

Upgrading entire system except SSD and HDD. Am wondering if there is a way for me to reinstall windows but keep a lot of my files. My SSD acts as my main system with most of my programs while I keep my HDD for storing a lot of videos and files for my work.

I am upgrading from an Athlon x4 to a 7700k and so will probably require a reinstall of windows but is there a way to do that while still keeping all of my files? I don't believe I have a external harddrive large enough to backup.

Backup user data from SSD to HDD.
Wipe SSD and reinstall windows (disconnect HDD during install).

Save your personal data elsewhere.
Full reinstall of the OS and everything else.
Copy your stuff back as needed.

Do I need to format the HDD or just simply transfer the files and reconnect the HDD after OS installs?
