My system is getting a bit dated now and I've been looking at http://www.systemrequirementslab.com/cyri. For virtually every game I play/want to play my CPU doesn't meet the minimum requirements for the game. I think it is time to upgrade my CPU but im not sure where to start. Is it better to buy a motherboard with a 1150 chipset or keep my 1155 and just get a better CPU?
My current specs are:
MSI GTX 770 Lightning Edition (2GB)
Intel i5-2400
8GB ram
Gigabyte GA-Z77-D3H motherboard.

I wouldn't mind overclocking as well to get the most out of the CPU.

Honestly IF you're going to upgrade you should go to 1151, ddr4 and Skylake. If you have a non K CPU you could get a 2500k, 2600k or even a 3570k or 3770k but good luck finding them for 200 or less. Might wanna look at ebay. Just pay attention to details.

i5-2400 is not a bad CPU at all, so I am unsure what games are telling you it is inadequate. I recall seeing it as the minimum for Fallout 4?

Agreed, an i5-3570k would be a minor %20 performance boost with some overclocking. Finding a used one for 200 shouldn't be too hard. I see a few under that price right away.

Wow, I used to have basically that exact same setup, except I had 16gb of ram and eventually upgraded that setup with an AMD HD7970. I know exactly what you are talking about. I upgraded to a Z97 based system over a year ago and have been very happy ever since. While I generally admit you will in fact get more features with the new Skylake/Z170 setup, the price premium is still not worth it. Processors are proving to give only small to moderate gains each generation. Its the platform features that make the biggest difference.
My current setup is:
Gigabyte Z97X-Gaming 7
Intel i7-4790k oc'd to 4.6ghz
16gb G.Skill Sniper Gaming DDR3 2133
Gigabyte GTX 980
Onboard audio
Crucial MX200 M.2 boot drive
500gb & 250 gb Samsung 850EVO SSD's for gaming
1Tb WD Black HDD for storage

I game on a 32" Samsung 2560x1440 monitor and play pretty much any game I want at max. I just finished Far Cry 4 at max details with AA turned off. I couldn't really see much of a difference with it on. I stayed right around 60+ FPS.

Admirable
We have seen huge performance increases and cost reductions in memory, GPU, SSD etc over the last 5 years.
Unfortunately a new Intel i5 is only a bit more powerful than an 5 year old i5.

I blame AMD for this. They are two generations behind Intel, so Intel have no serious competition for anything more powerful than an i3.

Imagine what CPU we would have if Intel and AMD were competing as equals....

Or get a 3750K to allow you to use the PCI-e 3.0 slot. Which is about 143.93 British Pound. With Sandy bridge they are only PCI-e 2.0 but it honestly doesn't make much difference.

A friend of mine linked me this http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00KPRWB9G?keywords=i5%204690k&qid=1452203818&ref_=sr_1_1&sr=8-1. He said that he overclocked it to over 4GHz. Is it worth getting this with a decent cooler and a new motherboard for the price? I've done some bench marking for my CPU on some of the games I play such as GTA V and it is using all 4 threads (don't know if that is the right word) at virtually the maximum.

As I said before IF you're moving up a socket then you should just go to a 1151 socket and get skylake. That CPU wont work in your current MoBo. I would either upgrade to a 1151 MoBo OR just grab a 3570k or 2500k and a cooler. But it's your money/

PCI-E 3.0 is a nonfactor.

...Which is exactly why I said it doesn't make much difference...

I was giving OP options. Is that not allowed?
