Upgrading from 2.87 Usable ram to 8 gb

I have a dell laptop of 3GB RAM(2.87GB Usable)with Intel i5 processor and 64 bit operating system. If i upgrade it to 8 gb ram and a better graphic card, can i use it as a gaming laptop?or is it a foolish question?pls tell me the pros and cons of upgrading ram and graphic card.is it better to buy a gaming laptop with 8 gb or more ram?

It's not foolish. More RAM would certainly help and so would GPU IF POSSIBLE to install one. Which exact processor is that ?
8GB of RAM is about minimum to consider computer "gaming" nowadays so that should help for sure but by how much would depend on other factors.

it is intel core i5 cpu M480 @ 2.67 ghz 2.66 ghz with windows ultimate (actually it was starter edition of windows 7 , i got it changed to windows ultimate)

Check laptops manufacturer sit to see if graphics are upgradable at all. The "Gaming" part is debatable anyway as even Solitaire can be considered a game.
