I've spent countless hours browsing multiple forums around these topics and still can't make a decision. Hoping folks here can sway me in a direction.

I'm looking to upgrade my 3600 because I play a lot of MMO/shooters (Warzone being main one) that have stuttering and/or straight up significant frame drops. All my single player games run great on 1440P as they should.

My current plan is to upgrade the CPU to a point that will be serviceable with new shooters/mmo games for a few years as I have an RTX 3070 I bought during COVID well above MSRP.

Next upgrade would probably come in 2025-26 in the shape of either a full rebuild or only a GPU upgrade once this one can't run games at 1440p on High/Medium settings anymore. Also have 16GB of 3200 RAM and 850W PSU with Liquid cooling.

So with all that said, I'm torn between the 5600, 5700x and 5800X3D - Money isn't an object per se, but the 5800X3D does give me pause just because I feel it's overly top end for 1440P and a system that I plan on using for 2-3y before a potential jump to next gen or whatever is hot at the time for my needs. Also the concerns around heat/extra power. On the other hand, the entire internet seems to be raving about it and how much it improves those 1% and smoothness of games even at 1440P.

The 5600 and 5700X both seem pretty affordable and the only concern there being that it won't be a significantly noticable upgrade (reading a bout 15%ish increase in FPS in these type of games) and that down the line I may need to re-upgrade the CPU although I don't think that's the case unless I go above RTX 3090 down the line which is not likely in short term.

Thoughts? Oh and this is for gaming optic, productivity/etc don't matter for this.

I am about to upgrade from a 3800x to a 5800x3d for 1440p gaming on a 144Hz montior with a 2070S.

Do I need this upgrade now? Nope, not at all. But as sizzling stated, it's to get a few more years out of the good old AM4 socket and smoother framerates at the same time. In the next year or two I will also upgrade the GPU and should be a solid gaming rig for many more years to come.

If you are primarily a gamer the 5800x3d is the perfect chip to top off the AM4 socket run. And I'm thankful AMD didn't limit this large cache gaming cpu to the 7000 series and the AM5 socket alone. I've also been looking at reviews and comparisons of the 5800x3d and despite some limitations, it's just a great gaming cpu plain and simple.

If your primary...

You might want to start with the proper bios and chipset driver.
See what affect that has.

I have an Ryzen 5 3600, Ryzen 7 3700X, and a Ryzen 7 5800X3D. I've used all three recently testing out a new RX 6800 XT at 1440p gaming. I was playing New World (MMORPG), and I noticed a big difference in the towns where lots of other players would congregate. The Ryzen 5 3600 did somewhat poorly (worse than I expected) dropping framerates well below where the Ryzen 7 CPUs could perform. The 5800X3D performs better than the 3700X on top of that. However, I can't say for sure if that's the improved IPC from the newer architecture and/or the 100MB cache (I'm sure both). I would expect either the 5700X or 5800X3D to be a big improvement over your 3600. The 5700X seems to be a very good value at just below $200 and runs moderately cool with a 65W TDP. But, if you don't want any doubts then go with the 5800X3D.

What CPU cooler are you using currently?

I had a 3700X and upgraded to a 5800X3D but this was after I upgraded from 1440p 144Hz to 1440p 240Hz. At 144Hz I found the 3700X adequate, but when trying to push higher fps I needed a cpu upgrade. The 5800X3D was a very good upgrade and would be an even bigger upgrade coming from a 3600.

My thought. The 5800X3D might be over the top for your current needs, only you can say. However, if you don’t plan on another upgrade until 2025-26 then I would get a cpu that exceeds your current needs. If you want the best chance of the cpu meeting your needs over the next 2-3 years you will want some headroom to grow into, AAA new releases only get harder to run than the ones released a year before.

If your primary use is not gaming then the 5900x/5950x would the better choice as a final AM4 cpu upgrade.

This AMD build was my first since the Phenom days and it has been great to see team Red doing well once again. Always benefits the gamers when we have Intel and AMD bringing good cpu's to the market.

I went with the 5800X3D for reasons above, wanted to get something I could set and forget for next 4-5 years. At this point upgrading my 3070 to either a 4,000 or 5,000 series in a couple years would likely give it plenty of life before switching to AM5.

Never replied here but I have a Kraken x63

The Kraken is a good AiO cooler. I have a Corsair H60 on the 3800x now but will actually replace it with an air cooler soon. The H60 in an NZXT 510 case has done an excellent job and I have no complaints with the unit. I had never tried one previously and while a bit over 3 years old I just want the long term piece of mind with the old school air cooler. Because this 3800x pc will be for my wife. Her current office pc is 10 years old.

So I actually will be building a new AM4 platform with the 5800x3d. Yes that's right, the AM4. I was looking at pricing and the updated x570s motherboards are "cheaper" than the new x670's. Intel is also quite pricey on the Z790's let alone the DDR5 costs. It's been a long time since I had an AMD rig that performed as well as the 3800x and X570 platform and more than happy to build another.

Have a Micro Center near me so stopped in and walked out with;
5800x3d
MSI x570S Tomahawk MAX Wifi

Some might call me silly but if ain't broke.........

EDIT: GURU3d just relesed testing of the 7900x and it's quite good. But look at the peformance of the 5800x3d in comparison when gaming. In the long term the 7000 series x3d chips should be amazing for gamers but the 5800x3d is a superb gaming cpu.
