[SOLVED] Upgrading from 6700k to 12700k when GPU bound

Hello,

Currently I run a 6700k paired with EVGA GTX 1070 (and 32gb 3200 cl16 ram). Both of them are starting to show their age and I'm considering upgrading the CPU first since it's cheaper and easier to get. I just want to ask: would this CPU upgrade somewhat improve the FPS in games that are GPU bound by the 1070 (ie. would it help with the 1% lows and stutter if too many players in same screen)?

Example: View: https://i.imgur.com/Zvpyvb8.png
(I also tracked each cpu core individually and none of them ever really went above 75% usage while the 1070 almost always stayed above 90%)

Currently using a 1440p 165hz monitor but I'm actually running the target game at 1080p windowed due to the gpu limit, with average fps around 95 and occasional drops to ~80 or lower. I'm hoping that upgrading from 6700k to 12700k can bump average fps to something like 110 with less drops, even though this is theoretically a gpu bound issue. Is that a realistic expection or just wishful thinking?

Thank you.

Solution
Do a test. Drop the game settings to 720p. If your 1% lows improve then it is the gpu holding them back at 1080. If the 1% lows stay about the same then it is likely the cpu causing them.
