Upgrading from 970SLI to a single 1080 - Is it worth it?

I know I know, there are probably a zillion threads of the 'worth upgrading' kind but can't find much info similar to my current setting and would appreciate some input.

My current setup is:

  • i7 4770k - Stock speeds.
    16GBs of DDR3 RAM.
2x Zotac GTX 970 4GB in SLI - Stock speeds.
3x 1920*1080 ISP LG screens in NV Surround - Gaming resolution of 5940*1080

I'm looking to upgrade to a GTX1080 (probably the MSI Gaming X) and I'm wondering a couple things:

  • 1 - 970SLI vs single 1080 = Worth the upgrade?.
2 - Can a single 1080 drive all three screens at 5940*1080? I know a GTX1080 can do 4k pretty well and that 3-1080p screens in surround is a 'lesser' resolution. I'm hoping it would give better performance than the SLI970.
3 - I read that the new Pascal architecture has some tech/improvements for surround and multi monitor gaming... can I expect any perks on that or are those limited to VR stuff? I would be connecting the screens using the DVI + the HDMI ports + an adapter from one of the DP port to the HDMI output on the monitor.

I think that's about it... thanks!.

BTW...That's not really the same. Twin 1070s in SLI are much faster than a single 1080.

As for the latest Titan info, there is pretty much nothing on it. However there is one rumor floating around which you can find in the GTX 1000 series Pascal MegaThread (link in my sig).
1. Most definitely, driver support, SLI in games, heat, and power consumption, plus you should always pick a better single card.
2. Yes, I don't know how it would perform in games over the 970 (varies by game) but it would still be pretty good.
3. To the best of my knowledge it's not limited to just VR, manufacturers are constantly thinking about stuff like this.

Prices on the GTX 1080's are running $150 or more above the list price right now. How long it is going to take Nvidia to catch up with demand to make those prices come back down is unknown. My best guess would be the September to November time frame.

We are also going to see the 16nm FinFET Titan being released as early as next month, at $999, and using HBM2 memory. They rumors say the Titan will be 50% faster than the 1080.

So lots of choices to make if you want to upgrade soon. But at the pricing the 1080's are commanding right now, I do not think its worth it at this time. Once they drop back down to their list price, then yes, it will be worth it.

Yeah, I know the prices right now are marked up from what they should be but I don't expect it to find it any cheaper in the future.

Bit of background. I'm from Argentina and here we have a combination of rampant inflation + devaluating exchange rate between our currency and the US dollar + a ton of import taxes retailers here have to pay. So while the international price will most likely go down in a couple months I don't expect it to be the same for the local price.

I COULD wait until the prices go down and import it from Amazon but the price difference won't be that much and RMAing it in case anything goes wrong would be a HUGE pain in the ass.
