Upgrading from 9800 gt 1 gb

USAGE FROM MOST TO LEAST IMPORTANT: i am into animation, a compositor ( editing, heavy 3d software's like autodesk maya, after effects, fusion etc )

CURRENT GPU AND POWER SUPPLY: 9800gt nvidia with cooler master 600w

OTHER RELEVANT SYSTEM SPECS: intel core i7 960, x58 , 4 gb ram ddr3

PREFERRED WEBSITE(S) FOR PARTS: India ( delhi )

PARTS PREFERENCES: ati or nvidia

OVERCLOCKING: Yes / No / Maybe SLI OR CROSSFIRE: Yes / No / Maybe

I live in India and know the prices and I really doubt you can get a better card for your budget. I'd rather invest in some RAM if I were you - your board supports triple channel RAM, so use it. The only two cards that fit into your budget are 6670 and GTS 450, and it's not worth paying $100 for the slight increase in performance they might offer. I recommend to save more money.

EDIT: BTW, since then $100 = Rs. 5000? What kind of exchange rate is there in Delhi?

yes you should invest these 100$ in upgrading RAM, if you work on animation, 3D max, Autodesk and those heavy applications you should get a workstation graphics card such as nVidia Quadro or ATI Firepro and these cards are pretty much expensive but the best for your work

Ati 6670 - rs 5600 /-

No you can't run dual cards in that way. You must use the same type of card (i.e. 2 x GTS 450) and I prefer to use the exact same card (same manufacturer/model). This prevents you having a situation where you run the dual setup at the lower of the two cards settings.

If you get an AMD/ATI as your primary card there is a way to use a Nvidia card as a dedicated physx processor, but you need custom drivers and I have no idea where to get them or how well they work.

I did a little looking and it seems your best options are either a GTS 450 or an ATI 5750. I saw a Powercooler 5770 that was listed for rs6825 that would be noticeably faster than the 450, but that is pushing past your increased budget.

I cannot recommend the 6670. I've seen some decent benchmarks, but it is moving sideways from your 9800GT. Unless you want to spend $100+ to have DX11 it makes no sense.

Personally, I would probably go with the GTS 450 over the 5750 since their performance is nearly equal and it looks like the GTS 450 is significantly cheaper than the 5750 in India. You should see a 30-40% or so performance increase over your 9800GT with either of those.

If you can find a 5770 in your price range it would be the obvious choice. It is a great card. I have a 5750 (had Crossfire 5750's) and wish that I would have put down the few extra dollars for the 5770. It always feels like the single 5750 is right on the border of playing games very well at 1920 x 1080 and the extra horsepower of the 5770 would have gotten me there.

For what it's worth, the 5750 has been sent to my ladies graphic design computer now and she hasn't complained since I put it in. It replaced a GTS 250...

6770 is a re-branded 5770. It'll give you same performance as 5770.
