[SOLVED] Upgrading from 980Ti, 1080Ti vs 2080 Super

As title suggest, I’m upgrading my build and I was fairly confident in purchasing a 1080Ti but then I dove into the 2080 Super and now I’m conflicted. The price difference between the two don’t seem to large and I don’t understand fully RT and how it will “improve” my gaming experience.

currently running games like Monster Hunter Online, PoE, LoL, Tera: Online and soon Arc Age and Black Desert.

“Ultra” settings isn’t a must.
Monitor I’m eyeing is:

Side Question: I was told by some friends that my 980ti is holding back my gaming performance. Considering I play most games 1 to 1 1/2 settings below ultra, I don’t know how much this is true. Once I get my i7 installed, will I experience a heavy bottleneck due to GPU being a 980ti?

1080p gaming is HEAVILY reliant on your CPU. If you are upgrading to a 9700k, I would wait and see how your gaming is before worrying about a GPU. I don’t know if I’d spend that kind of money for 1080p gaming if you already have a 980ti. I think the CPU will give you a significant boost and if you still want a new GPU I’d wait until the next generation releases to see how performance and pricing are.

A 9700K will pair very well with either - although arguably overkill if you're not striving for 240FPS Ultra.

I would test out the 980TI and see how you far - it's roughly on par with a 1070, so ~10-15% "slower" than a modern 2060. Certainly no slouch for 1080p.

As far as 1080TI vs 2080S, I'm assuming the 1080TI is used vs the 2080S being new? In which case, for similar money, the 2080S should be the better option.

$500 seems petty extreme for a 1080p monitor. I’d recommend 25 inches for a 1080p which seems to be the sweet spot before the pixels start getting too big. Check out AOC G2590FX.

All up to you. I got a great acer 1440p 144 hz 1 ms for $300. For gaming a well reviewed panel around that price is plenty. If you just have money to blow then do whatever you can afford that’s worth it for you. If you want to go to 1440p I’d definitely look at the 2080 super.

I disagree, a new 2080 Super costs around $800 while having similar performance to a 1080ti. The 1080 ti is perfectly capable for 1080p 240hz/1440p 144hz/4k gaming even in 2020. I got mine on eBay a few months back for $520 which was a killer deal and you can find plenty of cheap 1080Tis. As long as you're okay with getting a used card then the 1080Ti is the better option.

Also, it's up to you but personally, I would try to take advantage of the 1080Ti deals because te 9700k will work perfectly for the next few years and you are in no need of an upgrade. The 9700k is already probably the best gaming CPU out right now on pure performance. You could suck out lots of performance out of that puppy, even Haswell chips work perfectly fine with modern cards today. I highly recommend upgrading your GPU to the 1080Ti (again if you don't mind the used market), you could probably still snag one for around $500.
If its in your budget, I see your looking for a new monitor as well, I recommend any 240hz1080p/144hz1440p panel which the 1080ti will be able to handle perfectly fine.

So, really depends what they're seeing a 1080TI for.
If you could find one ~$400, sure, it's a great deal*
However, anything much beyond $500 + shipping, and it stops looking like such a great deal

*With the accepted (albeit likely small) risk of buying used.

I've been shopping on Amazon for pretty much everything, i can look around on ebay, tho i have been burned a few times on there. What im looking at on amazon as far as GPU is considered is;

MSI GTX 1080Ti Gaming X 11G
or
MSI RTX 2080 Super 8GB

If its in your budget, I see your looking for a new monitor as well, I recommend any 240hz1080p/144hz1440p panel which the 1080ti will be able to handle perfectly fine.

I always want to go with the upgrade, and i dont mind hitting the $500~ mark. I will probably pose this question for more detail in the monitor section if I can't make a final decision, I will most likely get the Acer Predator 1440.

I'll continue to look around, its not a must, atm, for the GPU but after looking at other post. If and when I do upgrade my monitor to 1440, I should do the GPU as well. Seems like getting a 1080Ti or a 2080 Super is a waste on a 1080p, specially mine at only 60hz lmao.

At 60Hz, absolutely. At 240Hz, if you want to (near) Max settings in higher-end titles, it would be necessary.

Agree, depends what games you play also. 240 hz is only beneficial for certain games that can hit very high FPS like CSGO and overwatch. Not every game can reach 240 FPS. I’d look at 1440p 144 hz if you are planning to buy a new GPU. Even then check out Acer XG270HU. As Barry said, 1080ti new for $700 MAYBE, not used and even at $700 2080 super is new tech with full warranty.
