Upgrading from a 2nd gen i5-2430M processor to a 2nd gen i7

So, recently, I've been wanting to upgrade my laptop CPU to something more powerful. I learned that I can't move up generation's due to the different socket types that don't match my motherboard. The thing is, I'm not even sure I can upgrade to an i7 in the same generation from just looking at the Intel website. I need a little more info before I sink that money into a new processor that ends up not fitting onto the motherboard. Also, would it be worth it to upgrade? And am I wrong about moving up generations?

Current Configuration:
HP Pavilion Dv6t-6c00 Entertainment Notebook
Intel 2nd gen dual core i5-2430M Sandy Bridge (Intel 3000 HD integrated graphics)
8GB RAM
500GB Samsung SSD
HP Motherboard with Intel chipset

Well, minimal video editing. I play more games on it than I video edit. I originally wanted to move up a generation for more processor capability and better integrated graphics than the HD 3000 is.

Alright. That helps out a lot. My other question is if it would be worth it to upgrade. Would there be a noticeable performance change with things like gaming and light video editing?

Whoops. A bit late on that. Alright then, so I probably shouldn't upgrade. If only I could upgrade to a newer generation. Thank you guys for the help.

I saw quad core i7's in that list. http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c03099531.pdf

Any i7 with a QM in the name is a quad.

You wouldn't need to upgrade the motherboard. The motherboard in that model will be the same in all of them that use that generation of CPU. Some models will have a different board for USB 3.0, according to that PDF, but the chipset and CPU support will still be the same. Just make sure your bios is up to date.

check the service manual, it have a different system board for dual and quad core.
20+ different system board
