Upgrading from a gt 240 ddr3

hi all

i'm upgrading from a gt 240 ddr3 as it says, it is still a good gpu, however it will be severely outdated to play newer games, because the strong point of gt 240 is dx9 where it can play games all in high settings and not in dx10 where it struggles to mantain good frame rates

and so i'm on a very tight budget (sub 50 euros) and after exhaustive search i found these GPU's which i feel it will be a good upgrade

9800GT 25€
or HD 4870 40€

i know the hd 4870 will simply massacre the 9800gt, but will the 9800gt also be a good upgrade from gt 240(ddr3)??

Well do not take me the wrong way but a 4870 will provide you no good at all.forget 9800gt. Today's games require serious graphics power for which you have to go up to at least HD 7770 Ghz edition or GTX 5** Ti or better . Otherwise you would be very much limited.Hoping you have a good processor as well.


And to a one-to-one and taking your budget in mind....go for HD 4870...Don't go for the 9800gt ever.....But still I would say its a waste of money
Believe me save a more on the 50 euros and you will be a lot more satisfied.

or if you are really keen the maybe a 6670 would do you good although it wouldn't be a major improvement.
I strongly recommend atleast a 7750.

yes i know that the games of today require much graphics power, however from what i read, hd 4870 or 9800 gt will be enough for 1366x768 with mid high settings at least?

i have a dual core 3 GHZ, and as i sayed on the title, i'm on a very tight budget, and i have only found those gpus which in their past days were top end and i think that they will do well for my resolution.

later i will do a full upgrade to computer however now i have that two options(only)

i will do a list of games i want to play with some eye candy:

battlefield 3(mid high, 1366x768 but i can stick to 1024x768 with no prob, always have used that resolution on my life)
shogun 2 total war(high settings and perhaps a few on ultra)
crysis 2(max detail with texture mods in order to improve the game)
crysis dx10 very high, 1024x768 or 1366x768
empire total war all maxed
most wanted 2012 at least with high settings
sc2, settings that rely on gpu ultra, settings that rely on cpu high
and some other games

i will also be playing wc3 too, but the hd 4870 or the 9800 gt is a massive overkill for that game, even a 7600 gt will do enough

and that's it, i wanna at least play games with reasonable to mid-highish eye candy

Do not get any that old card please.get atleast hd 6670.hd 7750 would be perfect for 1368*768res.

yes i know that however that's the best cards i found for the money, i searched for better cards at the same price however i could not find anything

Yes it is better but not a big gap.you will not notice a good performance.it would be wastage of money.it is better to stay with gt 240 and save up more to get good gpu.

Agreed with ash what does the rest of your computer look like. The settings you are after would probably be in the 7850 and GTX660 range honestly.

I don't know what processor he is using other than he is using a socket 775 chip I don't have the CPU model number he is using so its hard to confirm based on CPU frequency could be a celeron chip for all I know. http://www.asrock.com/mb/Intel/G31M-VS2/

ok that's the idea. not upgrade to a gpu which will be bottlenecked by the cpu, and so i have found that options above. i will wait to see if hd 7770 drops of price. if not i will go permanently to a hd 4870 and later do a full upgrade to pc. thanks to all!

Write off considering a 6670 as it is very weak and a 4870 class performing 5770/6770 can be had for roughly the same price. Your cpu can manage a 7750/7770 just fine, if you can overclock to 3-3.5ghz range you will get a decent boost.

Yea I can see a overclock helping the situation. The 7750/7770 aren't super stellar cards they are more budget cards and should hold someone over up and until they were to upgrade there CPU/Motherboard/Ram (if the dimm standard was different). I would look down the pipe doing a bucket upgrade.

Hey zeca112 I previously thought that you had a i series dual or quad. I can guarantee you that you will not get satisfactory fps on medium @1366*768 in the games you mentioned in the 3 cards that you mentioned. Bf3 makes real use of quads.

just get a 6670. its the cheapest card that will give you a satisfactory experience in most games at your resolution.
then get a 7850 when you do a full system upgrade in future

No man. Recommended settings does not stand for multiplayer settings. Check out requirements at www.systemrequirementslab.com ....There is some in-built benchmarks too available in google search too that clearly states that the game engine makes some serious use of 4 processing cores.One can never underestimate the real fact though I understand that some companies put too much precautions while publishing the minimum requirements for a game but the recommended settings are always true. And talking of a dual core , an i3 can easily handle bf3 because of its architecture but not previous c2d s no much how much you Overclock . Moreover the OP says ddr2 main board - so I guess PCIe 2.1 or maybe lower. Thats a drawback as well.I would not have focused in all this minors if he won't have mentioned 'eye candies' and 'high details' in the games he mentioned. That puts his system in serious criticism.

^ that's what i am telling they reccomend 4core for multiplayer not for single.at single it uses 2cores.

Right but when you play BF3 you aren't playing BF3 for the single player you are playing it because of the mutiplayer.

Right I mean the story is okay. But, the game is really centered around its rich multi player and that is where most people spend there time with the game. I know most people who have the game who haven't even touched the story mode.
