Upgrading from AMD-955 x4 to Intel 4690k/4790k

So I got a mate who's all clued up with this stuff but I need another opinion.

Current PC Specs:

Asus m4a89gtd pro/usb3 motherboard
AMD Phenom II x4 955 CPU - Overclocked to 3.8Ghz using multiplier (set to x19 instead of stock x16)
8Gb Kingston HyperXBlu DDR3 running at 1600mHz using 1.65volts
EVGA GTX460 SC 1Gb - stock clock speeds and never overclocked
Antec Earthwatts 650 watt PSU

Can't remember off hand what specs my CPU cooler is but I will probably upgrade it anyways.

So that's the nuts and bolts of my setup at the moment. I also game using a Samsung 32" LED TV at 1080p resolution, so I am pretty sure the GTX460 is at it's peak in the newer games in terms of refresh rate.

I've been wanting to upgrade the video card to a gtx770, but have done a lot of searching, on here via google, and on other PC forums to see whether or not it would be a viable path to take. It has been pretty much 50/50 yay/nay as to whether it would work, or whether the CPU would bottleneck the GPU.

I have been told by said nerdy friend and internet sites that the 1150 socket is still quite relevent and a much better path to take, as the bottleneck problems experienced by AMD are fewer (of at all) with Intel. My friend has two systems both running 4790k CPUs (he likes to boast about them all the time and make me feel dirty for having an AMD, lol), and he has the latest ATI (grose) 295x2 running in one and a gtx980 in the other.

So all I really want to do on my PC is mostly Gaming, but I also use 3D Studio Max to do ArchViz work. Would I be better off getting the 4790k? or is a 4690k good enough to tackle the rendering? I would say hyper-threading would be a big plus in the 3D renedering aspect of things.

I have been pricing up systems with all the internal components, and I could live without replacing the hard disks for now, but I would like everything in the specs list to be replaced. I can then sell the old system to another mate who wants a gaming PC, as at the moment he uses his laptop - all he would need to do is clone his laptop hard disk to a new PC hard disk and he'd be away :)

I've had the AMD 955 system now for around 5 years, and once I have the funds available I really want to update my system so I can have it great for at least another 5 years. I have been told by nerdy mate that I should wait until skylake is released, but if I don't need to upgrade to socket 1151 or even 2011-v3 (which is bloody expensive), I won't be doing either.

I still think that, personally, the 1150 socket is still very relevent, and some boards, like nerdy mates one, have M2 support, so I will most likely be getting same one he has (gigabyte gaming 7). I don't need quad channel ram for what I do, plus, once skylake and socket 1151 do arrive, prices for socket 1150 motherboards and CPUs should drop again (hopefully).

That's it for now. Bring your opinions and knowledge to the table.

Intel does NOT lower the price of their previous gen cpus and/or motherboards once new ones come out. If anything, they'll get more expensive.
Skylake cpus and corresponding motherboards will be right in line with current Haswell prices. MAYBE $10-15 more

True. I guess waiting for 1151 while painful, is the better option for longevity and cpu options and pcie4.0 and ddr4, but then 1150 is still good for 3 or so years....gaahhhh so confusing!
