upgrading from e6600 to e6850 - is it worth it?

I'm wanting to upgrade my CPU from an E6600 (which I bought a year ago) to the new E6850.

Firstly is it going to work with my current motherboard (AB9 Pro)?
Secondly is it worth it? - Would the 1333Mhz FSB make any difference

I can get my E6600 running at 3.6 Ghz if a bit unstable, but I would prefer to have a CPU which runs at 3 Ghz without having to overclock it.

I stupidly bought a Motherboard (although it is a good one) which cannot hold a quad core CPU - I didn't think that quad cores would take off so quickly.

Overclock your E6600 to 3Ghz at 333x9, That will give you an fsb of 1333 so it will essentially be the same processor but well within safe overclocking limits.

Dont do it , its a waste of money , OC your E6600 , i have mine totally stable @ 3.1

Thats thrown me then, I'm pretty sure that when I bought this MB the Quad cores hadn't come out yet... is the one on the website a new version?
Maybe I just need a firmware update?

Here it says it supports quad, maybe you need a Bios upgrade.

x2 from the other guys for oc'ing your e6600 for now.

Also remember intel is releasing their 45nm's cpu's soon. So i'd hold up for an upgrade see what those bad boys can do.

thats not worth it IMO, i wanted to do this but i didnt , because the difference wont be much in todays games, if he wanted to purchase a new CPU , i would recommended a Q6600 , but he has an E6600 now and its a solid CPU, so OC'ng it is the best option

If all you want is 3 GHz, OC it. The stock cooler will work just fine, especially if you can go into the BIOS and lower vcore. Mine will run at 3.0 GHz and 1.25 volt vcore with stock cooler.

An Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro (one of the best economy coolers available) should get you to around 3.3 GHz. Anything more requires an upper end HSF.

I will stick with the E6600 and wait for the Quad core CPU's to mature more (and hopefully by then more games will be implenting Quad core technollogy)

I would not even upgrade to the Quad at this point in time.
Your current CPU is fine.

Wait until Q1 08 when the Penrynn is available.
Or if you can really hold on, Q3/Q4 of 08 and do a complete upgrade to the next Gen Intel.

Way back in the day I "upgraded" from a Cyrix 686-166+ to an Intel Pentium 150. Sure, my upgrade was actually a downgrade in terms of most benchmarks, but in terms of floating point muscle it was a definite upgrade (my Quake 1 FPS went way up) and system stability improved dramatically. So for me it made sense. I guess the modern version of this would go going from a 2.6 GHz dual core to a 2.4 GHz quad core... for some people that makes sense.

In the OP's case, those two CPUs are just too similar to justify the upgrade. Is processor B faster than A? Sure... but not by much.

I was going to upgrade from a E6600 myself to a Q6600 but reading this thread it seems like it would be a waste. Now I am not sure what to sink that extra $280 dollars into for my upgrade.

I would recommend you holding on just a bit longer for either ATi's RV670, or nVidia's mysterious G90. According to nVidia, their next generation card is about 3 times stronger than ATi's strongest offering (3Tflops performance) Although I'm not saying 8800GTX is a bad card, but knowing something far more superior is just around the corner, I would hold on a wait a little bit. Your X1950XTX should be sufficient even playing the current generation games.

As for processor, yes, you should wait for Penryn, especially they're only one month before their official launch. Q9550 should cost about the same as Q6600, but should run a lot cooler.

On the side note, the ASUS Maximus is an overclocker's dream. I personally have Blitz myself, and it is nothing short of amazing.

thats a bad move - the e6600 will run 3.4ghz at 1.42v almost everyone will
what will the e6850 give you maybe 3.6

you need a q6600
