Upgrading from fx 8150, which CPU should i buy

Hi. I have been looking to upgrade the cpu/mobo for my computer for quite a while now, since it is old and is bottlenecking my r9 fury.

The thing is that i am on quite a limited budget, so i can't afford to rush out and buy the newest i7.

I have sourted out four proccesor mobo combinations, but i can't figure out which one will be the smartest:

Intel core i7 3770k with a z77 board

Intel core i5 7600k with a z270 board

intel core i7 7700k with a b250 board

Ryzen 5 1600 with a x370 board.

The dillema is can only afford the 7700k without an oveclocking compatible motherboard, and i don't know if that would be faster than any of the other CPU's overclocked.
Also i don't have any ddr4 memory, so i would have to go out and buy that, which i would rather avoid, but i don't know if the 3770k is as fast as the ryzen 5/ core i5.

I am only looking to use the cpu for gaming.

My current rig:

CPU: fx 8150 @4.7Ghz
Mobo: Sabertooth 990fx R2.0
Ram: 20gb ddr3 1600Mhz
PSU: Cooler master g700
Cooler: corsair H110i gt

As you can see i have watercooling, so overclocking should not be a problem, though i am not sure if i would be able to use the AIO on an AM4 motherboard.

Just grab the Ryzen 5 1600x with a B350 and call it a day. As far as the back plate goes, you can contact Corsair and they will most likely ship you one for free. There is no point in getting the 3770. Sure the DDR3 will work, but you will be on a very aged system. Getting the Ryzen 5 1600x should allow you to really shine. What is your budget? Maybe you can fit in the Ryzen 7 1700

From your mention of a F9 fury, I guess your main interest is in gaming.

For that, the I5-7600K with an overclock and Z270 motherboard is as good as it gets.

If your usage is for multithreaded apps, then ryzen or I7-7700K would make sense.

You can do an experiment to see how many threads your work can usefully use.

You can remove one or more threads. Do this in the windows msconfig boot advanced options option.
You will need to reboot for the change to take effect. Set the number of processors to less than you have.
This will tell you how sensitive your games are to the benefits of many threads.
If you see little difference, your game does not need all the threads you have.
If buying new, there is no sense in anything other than current gen.

Remember you will need ddr4 ram with newer systems.

This I can agree with, but I think it's popular because it's gonig back to AMD's old marketing days "we have more cores, choose us." But this time Ryzen does deliver on more cores AND utilization. However, as you pointed out, it's situation based.

You're plainly budget limited , they are your best 2 options , I'd take the ryzen , its nearly as good for gaming , it's substantially cheaper.

How is this a bad value? With the right overclock, you can hit almost 5.0ghz. I know Ryzen would probably be the better build, but that doesn't make the i5 bad.

I think you should look to the Ryzen 1600/1700 non x versions if your budget allows. Since you already have a cooler though you can go with an non x Version. I wouldn't go with the old I7 even though you save some money on RAM it is a dead platform. If you really want to go with Intel the I5 is fine for games, you will need your water cooler for it, no cooler included.

Been as fair as possible here , boards are all virtually the same spec.

Budget limited ryzen saves $40 , for that you've got 2 extra cores , 8 extra threads , boundless amounts of reserve CPU power.
May be only slightly relevant at the minute but 2 years down the line I don't see a straight quad cutting it at all no matter what the IPC - & maybe 5% tops of all 7600k owners get anywhere near 5ghz , 4.4/4.5/4.6ghz much much more likely (probably not on that board though)

The i7 is more of a worthwhile purchase IMO than any i5 , locked or not.
This guy has an 8150 , plainly he keeps his builds more than a year or two.

Re i7 - the issue then is a ryzen 1700 is the same price , same scenario as the ryzen 1600 vs 7600k (maybe even the 1500x).

Were at a stage now where generally the IPC just doesn't matter that much.
All these CPU's offer 100fps or more , if you wanted 144htz then I still wouldn't consider the 7600k , it would be an overclockable 7700k setup or nothing.

Do you have a Microcenter near by?

You can get a Core i7-7700K for $299. If you buy a Motherboard at the same time you can get $30 off the motherboard. With those two discounts you should be able to buy the i7-7700K with any new Z270 motherboard.

How about an i7-6700K + Z170? The 6700K is just as fast as a 7700K clock for clock. The 7700K just has more OC headroom.
