Ok so I have ordered a new i7-7700k and GTX 1060 6GB to replace my i3-7100 and GTX 770 2gb.

I am going to be using them on an Asus H110M-R Mobo/16gb Crucial DDR4 2133mhz.

Is it just a straight swap or is their anything I need to do before and after installing the parts.

Thanks

In terms of parts, it's a straight swap. However, that motherboard isn't going to give you as much overclocking fine-tuning capability as a higher-end board would, although you'll still be able to overclock.

You don't want to overclock the CPU further with that board. The power delivery is not great and it may cause instability now or degrade parts quickly.

At most I suggest tweaking settings in the BIOS so that you can maintain 4.5GHz on all four cores under load.

You'll also need a sufficient CPU cooler.

update:
There's also a new BIOS for that board with a CPU microcode fix (likely related to the Specture/Meltdown issues).

BIOS 3601.

I would swap CPU's then wait at least a day or so to make sure things work before updating the BIOS (if you've not done that yet) just in case something happens and you wonder if it's the new BIOS or the CPU that is causing problems.

I'd immediately run MEMTEST86 (then repeat after the BIOS update) as it validates not just system memory (DDR4) but also parts of the CPU.

Thanks for the replies,

I have CM HYPER 212 already installed so I will just use that (it ran between 950rpm and 1050rpm under load with the i3-7100)

I don't plan on overclocking at all. I just need more power than my current i3-7100/GTX 770 Combo.

Nice, my last build originally had a Hyper-212; a good bit of kit. :)

Just curious, but if you don't plan to overclock, why a 'K' CPU?

A couple of reasons really, maybe a mobo upgrade later on to get that overclock and for the moment those extra .ghz

It was only £20 more for K so I thought I might as well go for it.

Makes sense! :)

Will this fan work on this motherboard, or is it too big?
