I'm looking to upgrade my cpu from an i5 6400 to an i7 7700k/8700k, I bought a prebuilt pc over a year ago for a good price and I felt like the biggest sacrifice that was made was the cpu, currently i am using:

GTX 1060 3gb
16gb ram
1tb hdd + 40gb ssd

I feel like my cpu is slightly behind the rest of my system though I am not a massive pc expert. I do aim to play most games that have been released this year or last on at least high settings (or the settings 1 step before the highest) at 60fps 1080p. I'm looking to upgrade for the sake of future proofing as well as upgrading in general as I rarely upgrade parts of my pc especially at the cost of an 8700k but I am happy to make the purchase.

Is it worth upgrading my cpu at this time? Also is it worth spending £80 more to upgrade from the 7700k to an 8700k?

DO NOT buy the 8700K. It will not be compatible with the motherboard! Next, you'll need to check if you can update the BIOS to support a i7-7xxx CPU. If you confirm if the BIOS supports a i7-7xxx CPU, buy the i7-7700. The "K" version is for overclocking and I very much doubt that the mobo in your pre-built PC supports overclocking.
Your cpu if fine compared to the rest of the system. You will get 60fps easily with your system. If you really wanted to you could put a 7700k in your current system. All you would need is a bios update. An 8700k would require a new motherboard.
