Question Upgrading from i5-6500

Hello. Just wanted some answers to my questions. So I was thinking about upgrading my i5-6500 cpu to an i5-9600k. Is it a good idea? What motherboard do I need if I want to overclock it? I’ve read and watched on how the 9600k can overclock to 5.0 ghz. Can I just stick with the Cooler Master Hyper 212 RGB Black Edition if I planned on overclocking?

MB: Gigabyte GA-H110M-A
CPU: Intel i5-6500
GPU: NVIDIA GTX 1660-Ti
RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4 2x8 2400 mhz

Your current motherboard doesn't support the 9600K even though it's the same sized socket. For overclocking you'd want the Z370 (W/updated BIOS) or Z390. The 212 Black may not be enough to get to 5ghz.

Price to performance I'd go with the AMD Ryzen 3600 however you'll want to replace your current memory with faster sticks as memory speed affects gaming quite a bit.

Not worth it. The 9600K is a 6 core 6 thread part that costs £200~ and you’ll need a good board to OC it to 5Ghz so another 150-250. You can get a 2600 (6 core 6 thread for around £110 with a board for around 80-100. Or a 2700x for 160 or even a 3600 for around 200. All of which you can put on a B450 Max motherboard, don’t need Overclocking but you’ll need to invest in faster RAM. Though you can just sell old parts to cover that.

That board would work fine. As a heads up though 6C/6T may be limiting for future games, if you want Intel then I'd look at the 9700K instead for longevity.

It's a better cooler overall and one of the best ones for that price. If you like the 212 Black RGB for the RGB you could probably change the fans over to RGB ones but I would make sure they meet or exceed the airflow over the original ones so your not losing cooling performance.

Why don't you get a second hand i7 6700 and sell your i5 6500? It's a pretty solid upgrade from an i5 6500 and it's litterly a simple swap of cpus without upgrading all your stuff. An i7 6700 wont bottleneck a gtx 1660ti either.

It will also be much cheaper than a whole new system (cpu,motherboard etc) and you can buy a cheap cooler like a Evo tx3 ( I used it on my i7 4790 and it worked great)
