Hello there. I have Sapphire R9 280X Toxic GPU. I'm thinking about selling it and getting used MSI GTX 1070 Gaming X 8G in very good condition.

Cheaper than new RX 6400.

I want it for 1080p gaming and video encoding.

It is significantly faster than my current GPU.

Should i get it?

can you elaborate on your system specs ?
(what processor , power supply , ram etc. do you have?)

generally speaking if the price is right and if you know the seller is reliable
or you even know the seller personally than why not - although it´s already 7yo video card
it´s still viable for casual medium or even high 1080p gaming -
in terms of performance it´s the same as 1660Ti/1660super/rtx 3050 and much better than radeon 6500xt .
it also has 8gb of VRAM which is good for the card this old .

I still utilize a GTX 1080 Gaming X card. It's been a good one for me. Does reasonably well still in 'older' or 'less demanding' titles. Often in the ~75 FPS range with a selection of High to Mid settings. The one thing that it is lacking for modern titles is the resolution scaling that modern Nvidia GPU have, so (for instance) game like CB77 can be a challenge to get a good steady experience from without turning the eye candy well down.

I would look at this from the value standpoint. First off, is the price REALLY right? Second, are you going to have to purchase a new PSU for it? Last, are the specs of the current build actually strong enough to take advantage of the more powerful graphics card?

If all of those are true, then why not. If not so, then it may be more reasonable to start considering a new(er) build.

Worth is something only YOU can determine.

A GTX1070 will run on less power than the RX280 you are currently using.

There will be a bit of a learning curve changing from amd to nvidia.

Sounds like a good option to me.
