Hi guys,

I'm looking to upgrade the GPU on my main PC. It was built in 2014 with a Sapphire Radeon R9 270X. It's been fine since then but looking for some more power.

Currently running it alongside an FX-6300 with 8GB ram and a 500w PSU.

So, what would you suggest upgrading to? I'm looking sub £200 ideally. The Zotac GeForce GTX 1050Ti looks ok, would this be worth the upgrade?

Thanks

I would definitely go for a GTX 1060 even the 3GB if the 6GB version is not within budget (approximately only 6% slower than the 6GB version) to make your upgrade worthwhile with noticeable jump in performance with a small CPU bottleneck (CPU holding back graphic performance), see these threads for more insights:

The 1050 Ti has very similar power to your R9 270X, although I think the power consumption is lower on the 1050 Ti. Still, not worth the upgrade IMO. It is 9% faster than your 270X, which isn't a big enough difference to justify the upgrade. I suggest waiting for next gen Nvidia cards, or you need to increase your budget for at least a GTX 1060 6 GB.

Not worth the upgrade even though the 1050 Ti is a 4GB card and my 270 is 2GB?

Unless the games you play require the extra VRAM for the details at which you play them. Even then, the performance difference is minor. 1050 Ti can play AAA games at medium details, and 2-3 GB VRAM is fine for that.

Prices are slowly creeping downward as well.
Keeping a close eye on prices, or the used market in your area may let you go after an upgrade that is worth it.
I personally wouldn't buy a used card unless it was locally, so I could physically go to the seller, and see the card working before I paid my money.
And so I could see if there was a coin mining rig running there, since i would never buy a used card that had been used for mining for any length of time.

As stated above, something in the RX 580 / 1060 6 GB area would be where you need to be for an upgrade to be worth the money.

Thanks. I'll keep an eye on prices as it looks like the GTX 1060 is the better option. Definitely want the upgrade to be worth the money.
