Hello guys.

I am trying to upgrade to Windows 7 Ultimate from Windows Vista Home Premium.

I have an actual copy of the Windows Vista Home premium installed in my Local Disk C:, Which has another partition of 140Gb as D:

So my plan was to install Windows 7 Ultimate on the D: part and it will automatically have a dual-boot capability, (as long as I know, tell me if I am wrong)

However, the school only offers the Windows 7 Ultimate Upgrade version in the discounted price. They said that I should overwrite, or do a custom install after having Windows Vista on the hard disk.

But I want to keep my 32-bit Vista on C: just in case I run into any compatibility problems with 7 or 64-bit processing.

They said that I should install the Vista on D: and upgrade from there.

I can certainly do that, but wouldn't that disable the use of the Windows Vista on C:? As it goes through a validation process when installing Windows 7? ( I mean, the product key would not freeze, would it?)

Please advise me to the best option..

Solution
No need to install Vista again on D: to upgrade.
To upgrade from a 32 bit to a 64 bit system a clean instalation is required anyway, an inplace upgrade is not possible.
Run the Windows 7 instalation and select the custom option, choose your D: partition and continue, Windows 7 will create a dual boot menu for you after it's finished.
If you want to save your files and settings to transfer over to W7, you can use the W7 Easy Transfer Wizard, use this rather then the Vista one.
To use the W7 Easy Transfer Wizard in Vista:
Browse to the (W7) DVD drive on your computer and click migsetup.exe in the Support\Migwiz directory.

Thanks for the answer!
By the way, is there any chance that my Windows Vista on C: will be disabled as the upgrade has been made?

No don't worry you'll be fine, I still have my Vista even though I havn't used it for months except to download upgrades.
As I have 4 hdd's the amount of space it uses doesn't matter, so it just sits there in case I ever need it.
