My motherboard and processer are a Biostar TForce 6100-939 NVIDIA Socket 939 Micro ATX Motherboard using an Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 4400+. I'm looking to switch from the on board graphics card i have been using. I'm looking for a cheap one under $50.00 if possible. I'm looking for the most bang for my buck i can go up to $100.00 if i have to. I was considering a VGA 01G-P3-1302-LR GeForce 8400 GS Video Card - 1024MB DDR3, PCI Express, DVI, VGA, HDMI, Low Profile from tigerdirect a link:

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=6896097&CatId=3669]

My monitor has been going black for a few seconds then coming back like nothing happened for a while. It happens while reading a page some times when switching pages or while gaming. Some one told me that it was probably the north bridge of my motherboard getting a bit hot. So looking to take the stress off the on board graphics of my motherboard by putting in a regular video card. My pc also has 3 1024 kingston ram installed and i'm running windows xp home edition.

My case has 4 fans 1 on top of the case 1 on the side and 2 in the rear. So i am hoping that by putting in a new graphics card i can upgrade my graphics card while also doing away with the anoying and random black outs so to speak. So would that card serve my needs or can you give me a better one? And would it work with my motherboards chipset?

Forgot to mention my monitor is an Acer P201w. I'malso in the US. As for the power supply? I'm sorry i have forgotten i built this almost 6 years ago lol And i'm going to be doing a new build soon to give this pc to the wife. All she ever does is watch videos online and surf the web so this one should keep her happy for a few years after i build my new and give her that one and start over again lol Oh the forever circle of build then rebuild :p

By the way i'm new here. If you need to know more pleasejust ask i will try to answer if i can.

P.S sorry for the double postdid not see an edit option untill i already posted this doh

nvidia and ati both have good cards, ati offers wide range, but in nvidia you have a gtx 520 for low profile (not suitable for your cpu) and then a gtx550 which is overkill for your cpu and nothing is inbetween for desktop

hd6670 is better than that 8400 and is good match for your cpu and also for your psu

So what i need is an hd 6670 radeon? They seem to make several types of it such as these 2:

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=354552&CatId=7005

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/searchtools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=458908&csid=ITD&body=REBATES

So that would be my best option for a graphics card? Was hoping for something cheaper lol And i was use to nvidia products never really tried radeon cards out to be honest.

Heres 3 newegg links these?

@fuggles
lol
or maybe a gtx590

@asnorton44
iirc
all versions support 75w, there is no increment in power with increment in version
the main improvement is of GT/s and bandwidth and with some other optimisations too
so it will work in v1

@zolton33
hd5670 or hd 6670 (little better than 5670)

(or if you do not play games (or play old games on low quality and low resolution) then gtx520, 8400 or 430 can be on your list)

I'm confused :pt1cable: I understand that Nvidia does not really have anything to offer me as my pc is set up. So which card is the best of the 3 you have mentioned over all. Keep in mind i play mostly MMORPGS lol So far with my little on board 6100 i've only found 1 game i could not play and that was city of heroes. Although i didn't really have the best fps in all i played almost all on lowest settings for performance over quality in the past. So which one would allow great fps and quality over all?

I say get this 6570 which is $50 after mail in rebate

It's about as fast as my old Radeon 3850 for gaming and trust me, it will be a gigantic upgrade for you. You should even be able to play slightly older games like Unreal Tournament 3 at rather good quality. My friend also uses a 3850 to play a lot of MMOs like Guild Wars and it seems to do rather decent. The only issues is, if you have a PCI-E 1.0a board make sure to check if there are any BIOS updates for it that might address compatibility with newer cards. Some early PCI-E 1.0a boards weren't fully complaint at launch.

Thats what i'm worried about the compatibility with my pci slots.

Newegg stats for it:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813138264

Biostars:

http://www.biostar.com.tw/app/en/mb/introduction.php?S_ID=188

Will that 1 be compatible with it. It shows my chipset as an m9? So a 939 is an m9? :eek:

You may as well be speaking another language. :heink: I would not even know where to begin a search for a bios update to make my pci slots 2.0 lol Can that even work? :eek: Sorry last time i researched components was back in 2006 when i researched the pieces to my pc lol So i'm way out of daye :p

I have read up on it a bit and it seems it depends on whether or not the motherboard company releases a bios update to make the 1.0 compatible. Sadly only update i see for my motherboard is:

Resolve compatibility issue with Nvidia 7950X2 PCI-E VGA card

:eek:

Really so no 2.0 love :(

So i'm at a loss for what to do and get :pt1cable:

-_- bah. Well as far as I know the compatibility was mostly with VIA 880Pro/Ultra, Intel 925, and Intel 5000P though I remember certain nForce boards also had a bit of an issue. If you stuck with 1.0a then you could go on eBay and get an older 1.0a card like the 8800GTS 640 or something from the 7900 or 6800 series. On the AMD side it would be the HD 2xxx series and earlier. Probably more than a few X1900 cards out there, but you have to use the AMD legacy drivers.

From what i read the 2.0 cards are supposed to be compatible with my pci express x16. It seems it is the 2.1 thats not always compatible. Maybe some one more knowledgeable about it can chime in and let me know one way or the other?

Yes but isn't your motherboard a lot newer? Yours supports the am2+ and am3. Mine is a socket 939 and supports Athlon 64 X2 / Athlon 64 FX / Athlon 64. I read on here that it is hit or miss on the 2.1 cards working in old 1.0 slots although i also read that most of them will accept and work the 2.0 cards without problems. But i could not find my board mentioned here. what i did find were all pre 2006. So can any one say for sure whether or not a 2.0 will work? Or that a 2.1 would work for sure?

one who have a board same as yours and have used a v2.1 card can tell you surely

you may want to read this
http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/PCI_Express

mine supports 65w am3 only (stated by msi), but i am using a athlon 64 x2 7750

you can try to hunt down gtx545 (but is rare and highly priced), or hd5 series 2.0v card
if you still want a v1 card then say bye bye to dx11 and say hello to more power hungry card for same performance :lol:

((or if you can sell your current cpu+ram+mobo for 100dollers then you can get more faster rig
like
am3 board + 2 gb ddr3 + phenom 2 cpu + hd6670 or 5670 in around 150dollers))
