Upgrading GPU and keeping current cooler?

I couldn't think of a very good title for this, please excuse me.
But I'm currently using a small(ish) sapphire dual-x HD 7870 that originally came with a small dual-x cooler. Well that cooler did not cut it. My GPU was running very hot.
But my father gave me his old HD 5870 to tinker with, since he upgraded to an R9 290x. He had purchased a Zalman VF 3000A cooler for his 5870 due to his stock cooler failing. I decided to try the VF3000A on my smaller 7870. It ended up looking ridiculous because my card was much smaller than the cooler, and there was some small GPU sag but I fixed it by propping it up, but my temps dropped 20c!
It's been doing great. They haven't ever risen above 60c under full load and I have the card running at 1200MHz. But I'm looking to upgrade my card to the new GTX 970. This may be a very stupid question (sorry) because I know the cooler was meant for old ATI cards but I was wondering if by any chance would this cooler perhaps work on the GTX 970? I don't care much for how it looks and I can't get a different cooler, I have to get the cheapest 970 and it comes with a reported "noisy and flimsy" ACX 1.0 cooler. I was just wondering if I could manage to work a VF 3000A onto a GTX 970.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

One, that cooler was designed for graphic cards released back in 2010 (based on the 07/2010 review I found).
Two, The VF3000A was designed for AMD cards. The VF3000N was designed for NVidia cards. I'm not sure how much difference there is, but if they required two designs, I'm guessing an AMD cooler wouldn't work for an NVidia card.

The chances of your cooler working aren't in your favor. But I don't think that will be an issue that you will need to use another cooler on the GTX 970s. They only been out for a short time, so only time will tell. More than likely the standard GPU cooler will be more than enough unless something is wrong with it (then just send it back).

Thanks guys. I was just worried because people reported that the acx 1.0 coolers were noisy and flimsy. And thanks unknownofprob, I found it today and was amazed by the price/performance ratio. Definitely going to get it. All of the answers were helpful.
