Current build is
Motherboard: Gigabyte Z270-HD3
PSU: 750w
CPU: Intel Core i5 7600
Current GPU: Gigabyte GTX 750

My output will be to a 55” LG CX and will be connected HDMI 2.1 using eARC via an Onkyo amplifier.

I’ll be using it partly as a HTPC and also for gaming.

I’ll be playing games like Skater XL, GTA V, F1 2020, BeamNG, Forza Motorsport 7 and will also use it to watch Netflix, Prime, YouTube etc in 4K. I’d also like to be able to via 4K 60FPS videos I’ve made on my GoPro and also videos I have stored on NAS.

What is the best GPU upgrade option that will give me the best quality based on my current set up.

I’ve done a bit of research and am looking at either a Gigabyte GTX 1050 ti or Gigabyte GTX 1660 ti.

Looking for feedback and suggestions please.

  1. What is your budget?
  2. What resolution and graphical settings do you want to play those games at?
If you want to play those games at 4k 60 fps, none of those graphics cards are going to be powerful enough.

Keep in mind as well, if you want to utilise Hdmi 2.1, only 3000 series Nvidia currently has it. Older cards including 1660 have Hdmi 2.0b. Does your Onkyo AVR also support Hdmi 2.1?

Playing 4k videos be fine on a 1050Ti/ 1660 but those games in 4k, as RTX said, gonna need more powerful card if that's your plan. Rtx 3070 for example + Hdmi 2.1.

I guess resolution and settings will be dictated by budget. Looking to spend $150-$300 USD. Just looking for the best I can get to suit the build I have.

Yes the Onkyo AVR supports HDMI 2.1 via a firmware upgrade but to be honest I think I’m not going to achieve the full capabilities of the TV via a HTPC. Based on my current build, do you have any suggestions for the best GPU upgrade on a budget of $150-$300 USD?

Yeah I think I have to accept that I’m not going to get 4K gaming at 60FPS. What if I aim for 4K 30FPS and 1080/1440p at 60FPS?

1080p afaik scales well on 4k TVs compared to 1440p. For a budget card, 1660super (very close to the Ti and costing less). Or wait till 3060 comes out.

An RX580 could be an option for a placeholder, they go pretty cheap and decent performing.

Just reading about the 3060 now and that does sound like what I need. Thanks for your help. Go Cats!
