Hello. Quite recently i decided to upgrade my GeForce GTX 970 to a GeForce GTX 1080 (Gaming X). The thing i was wondering was, how smooth is the process of swapping the cards.

- Do i need to uninstall my drivers, and install new ones? (If yes, then how)
- Is it enough if i swap the cards, and just update my drivers to the latest ones released by Nvidia.

Something that might help, both GPU's are manufactured by MSI. Would love to get a quick answer so that i could quickly swap my cards, and get up and running.

Solution
You don't need to use DDU. Turn off the system, install the new GPU, boot up the system then download the newest drivers from Nvidia. During installation there's a box you can check that says "Perform a clean installation", check if off then install the drivers. By checking off that box the Nvidia installer will remove any previous drivers then install the newest ones ensuring there's no interactions between the old drivers and new drivers.

So i should perform a clean install through Nvidia Experience, and then im ready to go?

Yes once the new GPU is installed. During installation that option for a clean install may be through the Custom option and not the Express option. Although it's good to use the Custom option as most ppl don't need the 3D stuff.

That is exactly why im asking. The driver that i got installed is the one before the latest one. So i was thinking if i switch from a 970 to a 1080, and just update to the latest one (released on 1st of august). Then it would all work fine

You probably could just pop the new GPU in and use it using the existing drivers but I've always just recommended doing a clean install to avoid any issues but if time is a concern the drivers in the system should be fine.

Well, i have one update, so i might aswell just install it whenever i pop in the new card. :)
