Hello Everyone,
I am looking at getting a Elitebook 8560w as my main laptop. The one I am currently looking at has an i5-2540m. I was wondering if it was possible to go to a 2nd/3rd gen quad core i7. As for generations, since 2nd and 3rd aren't much difference, and I will be mainly using a dedicated graphics card, it doesn't matter to me as much. (2nd gen quad cores are pretty cheap ATM) However, I thought i read somewhere that there is a quad core motherboard. Is this true?

The Elitebook's Specs:
i5-2540m
8gb DDR3 SoDIMMs (Not sure what arrangement these are, whether it be 2x4gb, 1x8gb, or 4x2gb since this Elitebook supposedly has 4 slots)
Quadro K1000m (Planning on getting Firepro M4000 or maybe a GTX card)
320gb HDD (2.5in)
Windows 7 Pro (Probably will throw Windows 8.1 on it since I have a HP disc)

This thing is a decent price ($250 with Prime on Amazon) and will be a sizeable upgrade from my Toshiba Satellite L775 (i5-2430m w/out dedicated)

Solution
Generally, you can only replace CPUs in laptops with those that have the same TDP - assuming it isn't soldered to the motherboard, which many are. That i5 is a 35w CPU, whereas the quad core i7's will be 45w chips, and likely would overheat under typical usage if simply dropped into the same laptop.

It's possible if that laptop shipped with an i7 quad as an option, it already has an adequate cooler, but that's rarely the case.

AFAIK they use the same cooler for the quad/dual models. This laptop shipped with 2nd gen i7 Quad cores as well as dual core i5s (Depending on how the person/company ordered it) but I am looking at a i5 model because the i7 models are about $80-$100 more expensive.

As for it being soldered to the board, it is most certainly not. It should have an adequate cooler since they supposedly had support for high end dual core Core i7s in them (IRC) and I can always upgrade the cooler. However, has anyone tried a quad core in a i5 machine?

Oh, and by the way, some 3rd Gen Quad core i7s (3612qm for example) have a TDP of 35w.

this is the motherboard of your Elitebook 8560w

and your cpu has a PPGA988 socket so it is upgradable with a cpu of the same family

that model is successful upgraded with nvidia quadro M2000M (MXM 3.0a)
-8560w with Quadro M2000M
