Hi I am upgrading a old 16 port 10Mbps hub to a unmanaged 16 port 1000Mbps switch. All connection work except the cable that connects to a different network where the server is.
On the hub I get a signal no problem however on the switch it isn't getting a signal.. Any ideas on what the problem may be?

Also the Ethernet cable connecting the 2 networks is about 300 feet or so and ran on the telephone poles from building to building.

You have network equipment connecting through an RJ11 cable? There's your problem. In theory, if you terminate the cabling correctly, I could see it working for a few feet, but not 300. There is probably so much interference (especially if it's running arial) that it's total noise on the other end, if anything even reaches it.
How many pairs/what colors are the pairs in the cable going from building to building?

no no.. it is threw a RJ-45 connection but wired threw the telephone system the big telephone box or panel. The cable from building to building is an actual telephone cable with about 50 to 60 individual wires and is wired into the big telephone panel only 8 of those wires are for the network.
An Ethernet cable is wired from the telephone panel and into the hub via rj-45 connection.

Yea I know strange set up. Is not the way I would of choosen to do it.. My best guess is line interference, however how would the hub recieve the signal but the switch would not?
