So I'm planning on upgrading my cpu and probably my entire build overall. I'm wondering how much faster and better an i7 4790k is than a i5 4460 and I need to know since I'll have to get a new motherboard and also will I need to get ddr4 ram?
An i7 isn't a different interface, it's a different processor SKU. As long as your board has a compatible chipset (Eg Z or H Series with Socket LGA 1150), then you'll be able to use the i7 4790k. You can also keep your RAM. What do you plan to use this PC for?
The i7 4790k will be better for you then. The SLI Krait should be fine with that CPU, so go ahead and get it. The i7 has twice the threads meaning faster and more efficient processes.
The i7 has about 40% more throughput at the same speed as the i5 and it is faster at stock and even faster when you overclock. The KRAIT could be better for overclocking, but you should be able to get to 4.6gHz 24/7 on it. So
i5 100 x 4 x 3.3 = 1320
i7 100 x 5.6 x 4.6 = 2576 is about twice the throughput for editing, less on gaming because fewer cores and threads will be used at the same time.
