Hi all,

I want to upgrade my desktop CPU from i5-3570K to i7-8700k.
Was wondering if my other components are still valid/compatible. Current setup:

Intel i5-3570K
Scythe Mugen 2 Rev. B
Asrock Z77 Pro3
Corsair Vengeance Quad Channel 16GB DDR3-1600MHz
Corsair Enthusiast TX550M

Motherboard and Memory should be upgraded as I found out. Socket compatible and DDR3 not working on new motherboards.

Am I correct on this? And should the CPU cooler fit in i7-8700k motherboards? What about my Power supply.

Thanks in advance!

Solution
cooler and PSU will be fine in the new build. You are correct, you will need a new motherboard a Z370 if you want to overclock the 8700k if you dont then anything in the Intel 300 series will be fine. You will need new DDR4 ram I would recommend a 2x8GB kit. 8GB has become the norm/bare minimum for gaming now a days.

Solution
Not anything. AMD also has 300 series boards. Obviously those are not compatible with Intel CPUs.
Intel could not use B350 model name for their boards, because it was already taken by AMD. Intel had to use B360 model name instead.

I7-8700k does not fit to your Z77 motherboard. Thus you need to buy a new Z370 mb plus DDR4 RAM. If you want to invest that much I would suggest that you go for the i5-8600k instead which should also do quiet well with the Mugen.

Another alternative and by far lower costly - depending on what you are missing at the moment - would be to buy an i7-3770k. I am using this CPU for some years already and am still very happy with its performance.

Which graphics card are you using?

Thanks for the replies!

I have the AMD Radeon RX 480 (8GB GDDR5) as GPU.

Is the i5-8600k compatible with my Z77 motherboard?

I mainly play Blizzard games, have streams open, and do work in several RDP environments at the same time. So my goal is to up the performance for my current main activities and future games.

However I am doubting to currently invest 680 euro's for probably little performance upgrade for my current tasks.

No, i5-8600k also requires Z370 MB and new DDR4 RAM.
Considering for what you need the rig I would recommend to buy the i7-3770k and help you to save a lot of money you may then invest in a year or two to buy a new machine.

Got it, thanks.

It seems that i7-3770k is hard to come buy in the country where I live.
A used one costs around 210 euro's. New one seems to be a bit more.

I checked the pricing on the i7-8700k costs and it is 690 euro for the three components. (580 euro if I take the i5-8600k)

Big difference indeed!
