Upgrading Labor

Okay...

I'm playing DyP (Cause it freakin' rules!) But I'm sure the question
applies to all flavors...

In a current game, I have about 160 Laborers...

Generally when I upgrade serfs to workers and workers to laborers, I'm
usually doing it live... That is, I pull them all off their tasks,
march them to a city, upgrade them, then set them back on their tasks
(which is usually jungle clearing or automation (and yes, I know I
should not automate for 237 different reasons, but I do for the one
reason that there is such a thing as too much micromanagement))

But by the time I get to where Laborers are to upgrade to Engineers,
they are usually all in a city waiting for some pollution to appear.
(at this point I'm often reminded to convert some to population and
ship others to other continents)

When I upgrade laborers that are "sleeping while automated", do their
orders shift to sleeping?

I noticed today that pollution started building up and no one was
going after it for a few turns until I woke up the engineers and
re-automated them. Is that a bug?

I don't know about DYP as I haven't played it. However, with any unit that
is upgraded in one turn even sleeping or fortified will become active on the
next turn for reassignment. If you forget to automate them and only tell
them to sleep/fortify, then they won't go do the work when they are needed.
