Hi everyone!

I want to upgrade my laptop's CPU because I currently have Pentium 2020M and I think it's bottlenecking my GPU, which is GT 740M. I did some research and found out that the best CPU for my GPU is the Core i5-3210M. I dug deeper and found out that the Pentium and Core i5 have the same sockets and it's the G2 socket. Now I'm asking if somebody can verify that what I found is true and if anybody has had some experience with replacing laptop CPU, can they give me some guidelines or I should just give the new CPU and laptop to the store where I bought the laptop so I don't void my guarantee.
Oh, and the laptop is Asus X75VB-TY005.

Thanks!

It will depend on whether the CPU is a socketed type one or a soldered on one, and most laptops unfortunately have a soldered on one which means that you will not be able to upgrade it.

I upgraded my laptop cpu from Intel Pentium Dual Core T4200 to Intel Core 2 Duo P8700. The T4200 was 800fsb, c2duo is 1066 fsb. I'm using ssd and my laptop boots faster than old after the cpu upgrade. I upgraded my cpu, ram and ssd is working better now. If you have some experience about cpus and mobos you can upgrade it. I paid only $15 to buy P8700 😀 It is better than new 4core pentium n3540. You should upgrade it if you can. You have to look for FCPGA988 socket cpus. Your motherboard supports i7-3630QM and looks like it is best cpu for your socket. Sry for language i'm Turkish :) Good luck

So, you're saying I should disassemble the laptop and check if the CPU is soldered or not before buying the CPU?

@WhiteH4cker
Thanks for the tip, but the problem is that the i7 CPUs are quite expensive and in my country there are no shops that sell used CPUs and I'm not very fond of buying used PC components if I don't have to. Also, I would be satisfied with the i5 CPU because I'm a casual gamer, I just need the CPU to increase the processing power of my laptop which is pretty low and pretty often it annoys me at best.

I think before buy a cpu, open the laptop motherboard if it won't out of guarantee, and try to replace your cpu. If something happens it is not importanter than you :) Everything starts with tries. After you be sure you can do this, buy a new cpu. As you know at low resolution, cpu is importanter than graphics card. So a new i5 cpu will make you happy 😉
