Hey there.
I'm trying to upgrade my Laptop's RAM, and am having some trouble.
Laptop: Acer Aspire V3 771G-6851
OS: Windows 8.1 64-bit
CPU: Intel Core i5 3210M
Motherboard: Acer VA70_HC (U3E1)
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GT 640m 2GB
BIOS Version: 2.28
Original Ram: 6GB Dual-Channel DDR3 (1x 4GB & 1x 2GB)
From everything I've read about my computer, parts, and compatible hardware, I should be able to upgrade my RAM to 2x 8GB (204-pin DDR3/DDR3L SODIMM). So, I purchased 2x8 GB 204-pin DDR3L SODIMM memory sticks.
*Note: My computer says it has 4 memory slots. When I open up the computer, there's 2 areas to stick RAM in, and they both have a secondary towered slot kind of thing that looks like the lower ones (actually, one of these areas' towered slot is black, where the other 3 'slots' are white, and I can't fit any of the RAM in there, this is the 'area' where the 2GB stick of the original RAM was installed on the lower portion). Originally, in let's say area 1, on the lower portion, the 4GB stick was installed, and for area 2, on the lower portion, the 2 GB stick was installed.
When trying to install the new sticks I put each one in the lower portion of the areas after taking out the old RAM, and when I attempt to startup the computer I only got a black screen. I tried putting both of the sticks in area 1 on the lower and tower portions, still a black screen. I tried the same two things with the sticks swapped, black screen.
On some google search in some thread somewhere someone suggested clearing the CMOS. So I ended up disassembling my entire Laptop to get to the CMOS, removed it, let it sit for like 30 minutes, put it back in etc, but still got a black screen on startup on each variation of sticking the RAM in again. (Was definitely worth doing this even though it sucked.. Fan was clogged to hell, and my idle temps for everything on startup is ~10 deg C lower)
Couldn't find out any more information from searching, so I tried almost every possible configuration of the new RAM and the original RAM together, and if I stick an 8GB stick into area 1 lower, and a 4GB stick into area 2 lower, the computer will start up (no black screen).
Confused, I made this topic to try and get some help/input. If any other information is needed or a picture is needed of my RAM slots etc, let me know. Sorry for the wall of text.
Thanks for reading.
