Hi,

My old Asus G550JK gaming laptop died and I bought a MSI GE62 6QD to replace it.

Here is a link to the old (Asus) machine's specs: -ASUS-G550JK-4V-Gaming-Notebook-Intel-Cor.php]http://www.asusnotebook.com.au/3037_[SOLD-OUT]-ASUS-G550JK-4V-Gaming-Notebook-Intel-Cor.php

Here is the new MSI: https://www.msi.com/Notebook/GE62-6QD-Apache-Pro.html

I'm not very technical and was hoping someone here could help me with a couple of questions.

1. The old machine had 16GB RAM but the new one has only 8GB. Can/should I take the memory from the old machine and put it in the new one? (It looks like the old Asus has DDR3 whereas the MSI has DDR4.) Just wondering if I can mix these ram types and, if not, if double the slower one is better than the faster one in only 8GB.

2. I would like to access the hard drives from the old machine (it won't boot up). I had replaced the optical drive with a 3.5" 750GB SATA drive. There was also the inbuilt 256GB SSD drive. It seems a shame to waste these, plus I would ideally like to get some of the data from them. I know there are external caddies available, but I don't really want to buy 2 caddies to access these drives. Is there some kind of universal caddy/case that would allow me to access them both?

2a. If i did get caddies to mount these drives externally via USB, are these the sort of ones I would get for each drive respectively?

Solution
Hi, The only thing you would be able to swap would be the HDD's (Maybe the SSD) as DDR3 RAM physically wont fit into a DDR4 slot.

Also be weary when using drive enclosures from MSY. I had one that destroyed my SSD.
Okay thanks, Hamperking, and any idea if there is some sort of universal external enclosure for plugging both a 3.5" and 2.5" drive in via USB (not necessarily at the same time)?
