I have a Gateway DX4870 and it currently has 8GB and I was going to upgrade to the max of 16GB. First of all can someone tell me how to find out what motherboard is on here as no longer have support through Gateway. Also friend told me to do 4x4GB instead of 2x8GB. Went to Kingston site and memory finder says to use : DDR3, 1600MHz, Non-ECC, CL11, 1R, X8, 1.5V, Unbuffered, DIMM, 240-pin and this is single rank, but read somewhere that sometimes your motherboard will make you combine single rank w/ dual rank memory if upgrading to 16GB? Also is to upgrade to 16GB all I have to do is to install the RAM? Also I was thinking of buying 4x4GB, but can't I just purchase 2 more 4GB or should I purchase a total of 4 since not sure if totally will be the same as what is currently installed?
Thanks

Solution
Nothing special to do for installation. Just fully insert the RAM into the slot. It looks like it has a heatsink covering the memory modules.
There are few different versions of the Gateway DX4870 so I am not sure which motherboard you have, but it is most likely proprietary from the manufacturer.

I would go with all new RAM, and a 2 x 8 GB solution. Adding to existing RAM does not always work.

Sorry it is the Gateway DX4870-UB318 and I took this one person's advice to find out about motherboard by typing this in command line - wmic baseboard get product,Manufacturer, version and all I got was DX4870. I then went and opened it up hoping it would be marked and apparently it was 'cause it said Acer and IPIMB-AR and googled that and the Acer IPIMB-AR looks like the motherboard I have in here. When I went to Kingston memory finder site and also the one at Crucial's it advised using 4GB. Just asking - why would doing 2X8GB be better than 4x4GB? Thanks! Btw here is a ss of what the motherboard looks like - http://prntscr.com/5qb945

I have another question. I used to have the specs for this computer right off Gateway's site, but now it isn't viewable. I found this info so you can look at it -

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883113266

http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?invtid=DX4870-UB318-FB-R

This link here is info about the chipset -

http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/chipsets/business-chipsets/b75-express-chipset.html

The ones I saw on this model say that it takes DDR3 1333, but I got mine brand new out of the box and memory has never been changed and it is showing as this info on the stick - https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=1031352163548053&l=f2fc154d41

but as you see this is 1600 not 1333? I was wanting to put faster memory on here as it is and was told could only go up to what the motherboard would handle - can you tell me at all from the info off these links I have provided if you can see what that would be? Is it 1600 the max it can handle and if so I am wondering why on Kingston's site their recommended yes was the 1600, but below that they had some more higher performance ones w/ 1886 I think it was?

Safest move is to match what you already have, and not push it. I would go with the 1600's.

Could I use something like this in my computer?

It is 8GB and 1600, but mentions something about i7 and mine is i5 and talks about overclocking which I know is something gamers do to make their computers faster. I don't necessarily consider myself a gamer, but do run about 7 Mafia Wars accts on Facebook by way of Chrome's add user and about a couple months or so ago got a BSOD and on occasion at least one of my accts will crash and get a message that Chrome is low on memory or some crap - don't remember exact message. When BSOD came up it said something about a bad_pool_caller error. I know Chrome I've heard people say is a memory hog, but I always come back to it 'cause is the best out of all the ones I have tried for this. I also run extensions on those accts to run my game. One reason for me deciding to upgrade memory is due to that + I have a couple virtual machines on here and add programs on here due to school. Could I get some feedback about if I can run this on my system or do I first need to know if motherboard supports it or what?

Thanks!

But did ya' look at the link I posted? In case ya' didn't here are the details about what it says about this type of RAM.

Engineered and tested to deliver extreme performance, Kingston HyperX RAM easily endures the most rigorous demands of any creative professional, gamer, or PC enthusiast. Its 1.65V operating voltage enables stable overclocking, making Intel Core i7 processors run faster with a longer lifecycle. It also gives you exceptional clock and latency timing specifications to enhance overall system performance, while its heat-sink design achieves effective maintenance of speed while prolonging the memory lifecycle.

'Cause like I said it is 8GB and 1600, but mentions something about i7 and mine is i5 and talks about overclocking which I know is something gamers do to make their computers faster. It also mentions 1.65 v and the regular type has 1.5v + this has a heat sink. A friend did tell me that w/ heat sink should run cooler, but just want to make sure can use this before spend $$ on it?
Thanks!

Yes, I read the link. The RAM does not care if you have an i5 or an i7.

And if I installed this type of RAM is there anything special I have to do as they have heat sinks or just install and that's it? And they will fit in a typical slot?
