[SOLVED] Upgrading mobo/cpu/ram - ryzen build?

I am replacing some older tech.. From the list of what I am buying, if you see any issues, places to save money without sacrificing much power. Primarily for gaming. I am staying away from intel for this as I've read about too many issues currently. I chose the motherboard over the 370 chipset, I think this is good? Also, I'm not certain if I took the right ram, I see 2 vengeance models but picked the one matching the price of the g.skill - did corsair because doing corsair case and I don't think the difference on comparable g.skill price/power is much anyway.

Thanks for any input - yes budget computer, I'd rather not spend too much more than this, but again if I can save and really not sacrifice let me know. I appreciate you!

The b450 board will be just fine for a 3600. You will need to update the bios to run a 400 series board, but the Tomahawk bios can be updated with flashback, therefore you wont need a previous gen Ryzen CPU to update the board.

You dont need an aftermarket CPU cooler or thermal paste. The 3600 comes with a decent cooler. Considering it does not OC well, there is really no point in spending more in a cooler.

RAM is RAM and compatibility is pretty good on the 450 chipset. I would go with the cheapest 3200mhz RAM.

I would only say if you don't intend to OC, then you don't need a new cooler. The stock cooler with Ryzen is really decent.

Also, the mobo is an X470. You will need to check it has a bios that can take a Ryzen 3rd gen, without the bios update. If the mobo doesn't have a new bios, you will need a 1st or 2nd gen Ryzen to update the X470.

Most of the boards that aren't x570 will say "AM4 socket" but "Generation 2 AMD" not including Generation 3 in the description, does this matter? It's the right socket, but 3600 is 3rd gen..

I'll stick to x570 no worries actually.

The reason you dont see gen 3 verbiage is because those motherboards were made before gen 3 was released. The 400 series boards were released with the 2nd gen Ryzen.

The sockets are the same, both AM4. But the x570 motherboard will come with the correct bios to run the 3600. In order to run the 3600 on a 400 series board, you will have to update the bios. It can be a pain because some boards require the gen 2 CPU to update the bios. If you go with a 400 series board, get one with bios flashback to ensure you can update it with the current bios without the previous gen CPU

If you go with the x570, you dont have to worry about any of it. The x570 has some other features that you wont get on the 400 boards, but most of those features you wont be able to take advantage of. The x570 boards are expensive and many require active cooling, so they have another fan which creates more noise and is a moving part that will breakdown over time.

So there is a plus and minus with either options. But if you want the easiest, plug and play option, go with the x570.
