So in the next few days I should have my new Mobo, CPU and RAM arrive for my first major PC upgrade. I am upgrading from these to these:

  • CPU: Intel i7-4770 to i7-8700K
Mobo: Asus Maximus VI Hero to Maximus X Hero
    RAM: 16GB (2x8GB) Kingston Hyper X Fury 1600MHz DDR3 to 16GB (2x8GB) Corsair Vengeance LPX 2400MHz DDR4

I currently use the pro version of Macrium Reflect for backup imaging of my primary SSD and HDD and have them ready to run before the upgrade.

I also have got a USB with Windows 10 recovery media on it. I also have a copy of the WinPE Macrium Reflect environment recovery media on a separate USB.

I have looked into the Macrium forums and there is a function within the WinPE environment called Macrium Redeploy, which can apparently make Windows boot onto new hardware (motherboard etc) seamlessly with some manual input of drivers etc.

I have had serious issues previously with cloning/restoring my primary SSD (OS drive+apps), and as a result I am more worried I may miss out on a/several steps of the main hardware update process and cause another situation where I cannot boot into any drive or recover them.

If anyone has had experience with the Macrium Redeploy function that could share with me the step by step process that would be preferable. If not I could use with someone sharing the exact process of updating a PCs hardware from start to finish, though only regarding the software side of things. Eg:

  • Windows 10 and whether to reinstall or not
Should I unistall all drivers beforehand
Should I format my primary SSD (C: Drive)
Whether I will have to reconfigure settings for apps, games etc if using a disk image to restore
    Anything else related...

Apologies for the long block of text, just thought it best to be thorough with the context.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.
Cheers

As long as this was not a pre-build copy of WIn10, you'd likely get the best results with reactivating after a fresh install....

(you can certainly try the Macrium method first, nothing to lose)

See hat happens, install appropriate Z370 chipset and GPU drivers afterward...

Yeah I thought it would probably be worth giving the Macrium method a go first.

If that doesn't work, and I reformat my SSD and fresh install, should I just then recover my primary drive from the image recovery once Windows is back up and running?
Also just to clarify, what is a pre build of Windows 10? Probably makes me seem rather dense but just want to double check haha!

Thanks for the reply :)
