[SOLVED] Upgrading Motherboard for RGB Advice/suggestions

Hello friends!

Within the last few months, I upgraded my 7-8 year old PC with some slightly* newer gear (nothing I do is too intense enough to justify spending huge)

However I have fallen victim to RGB (don't hate me) but unfortunately, my motherboard (listed below) I purchased doesn't have an addressable rgb header. So I'm looking for suggestions as to which board I can purchase to get some rgb action happening - while still supporting the rest of the build. (ie, 4 memory slots, an M.2 slot etc)

Here are my current specs:

CPU: Ryzen 3 3300x
MOBO: Gigabyte B550M DS3H
GPU: Asus TUF RTX 1660 Super 6GB
RAM: 32GB (4x8GB) T-Force Dark Za 3200MHz CL16
PSU: Coolermaster 550w gold (fully modular)
Storage: Samsung Evo Plus 250GB M.2 + External Drives
Case: Deepcool Matrexx 50 (Mid Tower ATX)

With a budget of ~$250-$500 for a new board + fans (3 intake, 3 exhaust) - what would you suggest?

On the low budget side 50 bucks, 6 fans and 2 strips, with remote to control them. (no need to buy a new motherboard)

Why not just add an Addressable RGB controller and ARGB strips and fans instead of a new motherboard.

See I have the CoolerMaster ARGB controller (the one that comes with the MF120R ARGB 3 pack) - however the default colour options include breathing/flashing of each colour, fading through each one, a chase & mix rgb - I'm wanting a little more control in terms of setting static solid colour, perhaps changing the intake and exhaust fans to separate colours etc.

Something that this contoller isn't cabable of doing without an addressable header - which is why I'm looking for suggestions.

The second link you posted - that just goes into a USB header on the motherboard - Seems like a great alternative though! Although I'm 99% sure my board only has the 1 USB 9 pin header for the front usb connections right?

It looks like your motherboard does have Regular RGB and Addressable RGB headers:

  1. 2 x addressable LED strip headers
  2. 2 x RGB LED strip headers

So I would see if you can connect your current RGB controller to the MB and use the Gigabyte RGB software (RGB FUSION 2.0) to control it before buying anything else.

That's what I thought too, but apparently that's only for LED strips. I tried connecting my controller via the 3 pin rgb cable to that exact slot, but no success.

The ASUS Prime B550M-A is only $200 here in Australia, which comes with the proper addressable rgb header 2.0 that I need. I'm thinking that might be a good cheap-ish option/replacement?

#5 (one on the bottom and one on the top right) are Addressable RGB headers.
#7 (near the ARGB headers) are the regular (non-addressable) RGB Headers

My apologies! I just re-setup my fans, installed the RGB fusion app, and now I have full control.
