I have a Lenovo H520 Desktop and I am wanting to upgrade the mobo to something more upgrade friendly. The stock mobo dosent appear to be able to house the gpu I want to get (MSI - GeForce GTX 1050 Ti 4GB Video Card). I know I will for sure get a new psu and most likely a new case. With getting a new mobo is it as easy as plugging everything into the new one and putting to old cpu into the new board? Should it just turn back on like normal or is there something more that has to happen? If anything a detailed instruction on swapping mobos would be greatly appreciated.

Hi

There are questions about this upgrade on lenovo forums

Some have 180 watt psu which would need replacing and is a non standard size
The small case is the limiting factor not the motherboard

You need to look further into if the motherboard uses standard mounting pillars and connectors for usb , switches, leds , removable back plate etc before changing the case.( Looks fairly standard)

Lenovo publish a maintenance manual which shows
There is an option of a low profile and short graphics card

But Not the standard gtx 1050

But for gaming you may be better off trying to sell this pc and put the money towards a new gaming pc

What makes you think it won't use a 1050Ti? It has a PCIe x16 slot.

As for changing the motherboard. You will need to buy a new Windows license. You may have to reinstall Windows. As the chipset is so similar you probably won't. You will also need to install new drivers.

First you have to see motherboard, cpu, ram and graphics card compatibility for that visit the below linked website and enter your current cpu and gpu models then enter all other required components. the site lists all compatible components if you check mark the compatibility filter

PCPartPicker

Then you need to install the Windows 10 OS and required drivers (which are available on the motherboard website which you are going to purchase)

I suggest to back up all your data if you are replacing motherboard

an extra link is provided for motherboard replacement you can benefit from that below

I have never changed pc parts or built a pc. I just made an assumption that the motherboard it already has wouldn't provide enough clearance for the 1050Ti.

Clearance is a matter of case size. Not motherboard size. A new motherboard will have the same thickness. If you have the Mini Tower model it should fit If you have the Small Form Factor (SFF) model. You will either need a new case or a low profile version of the GTX 1050 Ti.

The mini tower model has the DVD is mounted horizontal. The SFF model the DVD is vertical.

I have the H520 not the H520s
