Looking to upgrade my pc. I game and want to future proof my rig for a little longer. I play a lot of Hell Let Loose and my rig does show its age a bit. I cant play the game maxed out and have to tweak the settings a bit. My game isn't as smooth as it should be, I have a lot of programs running in the background too for side projects that I like to keep open or work on them when I die in the game for a few minutes in between deaths or matches. I play at 2160 x 1440p with a 27" screen. I would like to get a ultra wide at some point too at around 34". I I'm not looking to upgrade my GPU at the moment due to funds, maybe in 2 years but I would like to upgrade the CPU and maybe other things too based on recommendations and gain maximum performance possible. I'm not bias towards AMD or Intel. Here is my rig.

Intel i7 8700k running 4.6ghz every core
RTX 3070 FE 8gb
2x Samsung 870 evo plus 500gb NVMe
Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4 3600 c18
H100 liquid cooler

If you wanted to keep to the same board, if you go 9th gen, you could get an i9 like the 9900k, I'm not an intel guy as much, but we have a lot of them at work. If I recall, the i7 chips were 8 cores no hyperthreading. So you'd probably want the i9 for the hyperthreading, otherwise, doesn't seem to me like the newer i7 would be much of an upgrade. So I'd suggest look at that and resell your 8700k. Or maybe look at a new board/cpu.

Edit: you posted while I was typing. then in that case, you can either look at the new ddr5 stuff, or I think intel has newer boards that support ddr4. Or you can always look at ryzen as they are competitive also.

Im looking at a cpu/mobo combo at around the $500-$700 mark. Would a basic am4 board and a 5900x be perfect? I know the 5800x3d is amazing but pricy. I don’t need to overclock anymore, stuff today is so fast anyway so I figure I could get away with a cheap mobo.

Right now I've got the Ryzen 5 3600. I have a friend who's got the 3900x I believe and is happy with that though. I don't know if you live near a Microcenter, but the one near me is advertising get a Ryzen 7 5800x with an Asus X570 TUF board for $489.98. Or if you got the same cpu with an MSI Tomahawk B550, it's $449.98.

It looks like too they've got a deal for the Asus X570 TUF gaming Wifi motherboard and a 5900x for 589.98

They do have the 5950x, but unless you didn't mind an Asus B550 micro board, you'd be over 700. It looks like the 5950x is a 16 core part, and the 5900x is a 12 core. So you'd need to determine the worth of the extra cores to you. Personally I'm still running an old AsRock AB350 Pro 4 board. I think it will accept 5000 series with an update so I may go later for a 5700x or something.

I wouldn't mind a 5800x 3d but 448 is huge price tag. So personally I'll probably eventually pick up a 5700x or maybe 5800x.

What is your budget?
My guess is that a good option would be a 12th gen I5-12400 which goes for about $200 and a B660 DDR4 based motherboard which might be $110 or so.
Here is what it can do:
https://www.tomshardware.com/news/intel-core-i5-12400-review
You can reuse your 3200 speed ram.
Most games depend on good single thread performance for smooth operation.
If you run the cpu-Z bench on your 8700K you should get a score about 468.
The 12400 can do about 702:

Yes, you can go stronger, but what you mostly get is more processing threads and only a small bump in max turbo speeds.
12400 max turbo 4.4
12600k 4.9
12700K 5.0
To get max turbo, you need to keep cpu heat under control.
Namely <70c.
Your H100 was ok for it's time and would be ok for the 12400.
But, by now, it may be getting old.
AIO coolers do no last forever so I would consider upgrading it.
Go to a 240 aio or a twin tower air cooler for the 12600k or 12700K.

Okay so I ended up with an Intel 12600k, Msi z690-a pro mb and a msi 360 aio. Works fantastic and used some of my older stuff to. This pc flys. I didn’t want to go i7 or i9 because I feel this is sufficient enough and those cpus seem over kill.

12600k is a great pick. I upgraded to 11600k last november mostly because 12600 required a new cooler and I wanted to save some money but If I had some more to spare 12600k would be my pick, especially considering I use my pc strictly for gaming and 12600k is more than enough. Even 11600k has been pretty good tbh. Felt like a game changer over my old 7700K and I didn't even need to overclock 11600k.

The system is so much faster. I feel like the 8700k was a great processor but those “E” cores really do make a difference. Especially when I game and have background programs open. The latency was a lot worse before and could tell my system was struggling. Can’t tell I have programs open now. Intel really hit it out of the park imo. Gaming is special now too.
