upgrading my brothers gpu with a little over a 200ish budget

my little brothers core build is
fx 6300
and an r9 270x... At the moment all he does is play Rust, but his birthday is coming up and I was looking at gpu upgrades because I know he's probably going to get himself players unknown Battleground.
So right now I've been looking at getting a 1060, i'm seeing one go for about 220$ on newegg
https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814125906
so what makes this different than other 1060's except for the fact that it has 3gb of vram instead of 6. ?
It doesn't look like its a mini 1060 or anything.
Besides the ram difference, is the 6gb version that much better? , because its way more expensive
I was considering just getting him a 970, but all the prices I've seen still have the priced at like
300$+ for some reason (pretty much the same price i bought mine in 2015).
I at least want to know if the 1060 I linked in chat is better than a 970 with 3.5gb of vram

I'm open to other suggestions too.

Solution
The 3GB 1060s also have 10% of their cores disabled compared to the 6GB versions, so performance will be about 10% lower than those cards. They should still manage around 50% higher framerates than a 270X though, assuming the CPU doesn't hold back performance in a particular game. Battlegrounds is apparently rather demanding on the CPU though, so I'm not sure what sort of performance gain there would be for that particular game, using that processor. The FX-processors are a bit behind the newer processors from AMD and Intel, and could prevent a 1060 from getting fully utilized in a demanding game like that.

A) the 970s were hindered by the missing .5GB RAM and how it processed it - thus why I got paid as part of the lawsuit against Nvidia.
B) 1060 would be BETTER performance because it using PASCAL architecture, and as a 1060 owner I will say it worked better than my 970
C) 6GB will perform BETTER than 3Gb because the more VRAM is used for games like PUBG, etc. so more VRAM is better.

D) NONE OF THIS WILL HELP YOUR BROTHER - His fx 6300 can't keep up and CHOKES any of these gains because it is a dead CPU. It stopped being relative to gaming back in 2013 and doesn't show on gaming charts for years now. If you REDUCE the graphics to LOW / MEDIUM it may be okay on the FX6300 at LOW resolution, but really at that point for the "220$" or "300$" you should buy him a refurbed PS4 and he can play ALL the titles out there (PUBG will be on console soon enough, it still in BETA) with MANY @ HIGH graphics 60FPS which he won't ever do on the dead FX.

if you want more gpu power you are going to also need to upgrade your setup

the fx line is too weak to handle anything better than what he currently has

just wasted money and disappointment on the little improvement you may get

at the bare minimum you need 4.5 ghz on that 6300 to make a gtx 970 level card even remotely show its true performance

i mean I already know the 6300 is garbage, but i'm talking more specifically about graphics performance between the cards. I just wanted to get something to improve his fps a decent amount. I've seen gameplay of people playing the game with a 6300 and a 1050ti (ran at like 45 fps on low to med. for pubg), I just didn't see the specific combination of the 6300 and the 1060 3gb.
Pubg also is hardly optimized at all right now, I have it on my i5 4690k, gtx 970 desktop and it still dips down from 110 fps to 30 min for no reason (literally no big effects other than getting shot).
His fx 6300 is temporary until I get my self a new build and just give him my current one.

*when pubg actually gets fully released (although it'll probably be never) the game will be able to run on lower rigs, when the game is on the lowest possible graphics, it honestly isn't impressive, litterally playdoh graphics

which means you would gain no fps as the cpu is the limiter NOT the gpu

adding a 1080 ti would gain him no fps in a cpu bound game like that

ran at like 45 fps on low to med. for pubg

specific combination of the 6300 and the 1060 3gb = 45 fps

6300 + gtx 1080 ti = 45 fps
