I got a Dell XPS 8900 cheap, but it has the pretty poor GTX 745 graphics card. I want to upgrade the graphics card, but don't want to invest in a new power supply as money short, so I'm looking to buy a GTX 960 as I know that the stock PSU can handle a GTX 960. I'm not sure which 960 to buy, and was thinking about buying the MSI GTX 960 4GB Twin Frozr. What I'm wanting to know is will this card fit in my case ok, and if not which brand will, and do AMD have anything better to offer around the £200 margin?.......

Solution
The XPS 8900 is available with a GTX970 so any GTX 960 should fit fine. The one you selected is good, the different models just offer different clock speeds (and overclocked), and can perform slightly faster, but not a huge amount. Right now at that price point the R9 380 and 380x performs faster and should also fit if you want to go AMD.

Thanks for the reply. Will the dell stock power supply work with a 380 and 380 X?.......I only ask as I don't want to spend more money on a new power supply as well.

Yikes, sorry about that. I should have mentioned that as well, it looks like your Dell has a 460w power supply which should be fine for a GTX 960 but is cutting it a little short for a R9 380. It should work, but there is a small chance it won't be enough.

No problem, and thanks for the supply. I think I should go with the GTX 960 then, just to be on the safe side, as I'd be stupid risking my machine just for a bit better performance.

Dell says xps 8900 has a 450W psu which supports upto 225W gpu. 380 and 380x alone draws close to if not more than 300W from psu. So, no. Your current psu will not work with r9 380s.

Thanks for the reply, but I take it I'm good with a GTX 960?.......

Do you know if a R9 390 will fit in my case, I'm looking at the MSI Twin Frozr 8G version, as it seems a pretty good card for the money. I know I'll have to buy a new power supply as well, but this card sounds great value for money.

Considering the case will hold a GTX 970, and they are virtually the same size, it should fit fine.

And yes definitely get a new PSU

Thanks for your help. One last question, which do you think is the better card overall, the GTX 970 or the R9 390?........

Thanks for the help mate, much appreciated
