Hello everyone.

I hope you can help me here.
I have my gaming pc for almost 2 years and i'm thinking about upgrading my CPU.
My current specs are:

AMD FX 6300 OC 4.2GHz
MSI GTX 960 4GB
ASUS M5A97 2.0
12 GB DDR3 RAM
600W Power Supply
1TB Toshiba HD
250GB Samsung 850 EVO SSD
Cooler Master Hyper 212x
BitFenix Nova Black (Window)

I'm only thinking about changing the CPU atm (Motherboard and RAM aswell if the upgraded CPU requires another socket ofc).

My current budget is around 300€ MAX for the CPU only. I have some in mind like the I7 6700k and i7 4790k or even the AMD Ryzen, but I want to know your opinion and your ideia.

Thanks

Well it depends what you are going to be doing. Do you plan on overclocking? If you are PURELY gaming, I would probably suggest Ryzen as it's a bit cheaper. However, that doesn't mean Intel's chips are bad, but Ryzen has a slight advantage in their core utilization. But it does come to the fact that it has no iGPU. So if you GPU dies and you are waiting on a replacement, you can't use your computer. I personally have the 6700K clocked at 4.7ghz, and it does exactly what I need it to do.

for now overclocking your FX will be just fine for the GTX 960

You have a decent cooler and mobo

Getting a 6700K is way too much money for a gaming CPU, maybe if you are a content creator as well. But even then, the ryzen 5 1400 and ryzen 5 1600 are moe compelling options

However, I'd wait for AMD to release better ryzen CPUs, the current ones are not bad. But they are limited to a 4 GHz OC for the most part

the 7700k is no longer worth it. It is having overheating issues and given the GPU he doesn't need an i7

Hey, yeah I just use my PC for gaming overall but this CPU struggles a lot on Arma 3, Miscreated etc.. That's the main reason I'm currently thinking about upgrading it.
Thanks for the reply.

OK, like I said you are going to be spending like 500€ for the entire platform. It is not worth it, you can keep your current FX 6300 what power supply do you have?

Yeah it's lot of money for a CPU but sure is a good investment.
I'm only thinking upgrading it because I feel that in the type of games that I play like (Arma 3, DayZ, etc...) requires a good CPU and this one struggles to even reach 30 fps on arma (online).

It might be due to your GPU

The CPU is not as important as you think, only if you are playing games ar 144hz

Hum, I was looking for the arma 3 (recommended) requirements and I found this " GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660 / AMD Radeon HD 7800 Series with 2 GB VRAM " and for CPU "Intel Core i5-4460 or AMD FX 4300 or better".

I'm confused right now, my specs surpass every requirement... Maybe the online servers?

recommended requirements don't matter. At times they just want to make you buy newer stuff

So, the problem might be my GPU that's it? I was thinking about upgrading for a 1060 in the future, but I wanted to upgrade the CPU first.

Zalman is known for cases, but not for power supplies. And the fact that you've never had any issues doesn't mean it is good. I am not sure how good it is.

Yes upgrading your CPU is a wise choice. A ryzen 5 1400 or ryzen 3 1100 is all you need. And in the future I wouldn't buy a 1060, I'd wait for the 2060

Yeah makes sense.

Ok I will definitely take those CPU's into consideration.
Funny because when I built this PC I wasn't that really into hardware,I had a 750 Ti when I started, and a year later (2016) I saw the 960 on sale for 200€ I bought it straight away, without knowing that 1 month late the 10s gen came out ... It was very sad times for me lol.

Thanks !

Welcome

Yeah it is tricky for most people to be updates with the new releases. Many people just don't have the time to see wether or not a new GPU has been released but ofc it is best the get the latest GPU. In my case I didn't have that problem I wanted to grab a 750 ti, good performance, low power consumption but the 950 had just come out and almost since that moment I knew that would be my card because 750tis were overpriced in my town.
