So I have seen people upgrading their 8700s, without even upgrading to a 500W PSU, with the dell's stock 460 psu.

I've got a $150 budget to upgrade that shoddy GT 635, into a monstrous graphics card.

It comes with an Intel Core i7-4770 (3.40GHz), 8GB of DDR3 RAM, and a 1TB HDD with Windows 8 installed.

Solution
you could go with a gtx 950, but i would go with a 750ti (or a used 950) and a decent PSU, the wattage isn't bad, but the quality is eh, and you don't want to fry your new GPU

I was thinking of getting that and a new SSD to boot up in a millisecond, but I guess better to be safe than sorry. RIP MY SSD DREAMS I WILL GET YOU ONE DAY

yeah, i would go for a lower wattage, higher quality psu, but that is still light years better than that stock psu. check out seasonic, they are a good brand

I really can't, my parents have limited me to only buying PSUs from my local Fry's, so rip. This'll have to do for now.

kk, have fun building!

I hope im not too late with this... but you do NOT need a new psu. I've seen people running 970s and even the occasional 980 ti on the 460w psu.

I had upgraded to a SSD and a 960 and was perfectly fine (120W TDP). I would look for a used 960 if youre tryign to save. or potentially one of amd or nvidias new line of cards with less than 120w (not sure which have less)

Same, I am running a gtx 960 in my Dell XPS 8700 with a 460 Watt PSU
