Upgrading My Family System?

Hello. I bought for my kids three separate laptops for them to play on the internet at their leisure a few years ago. In resent events we now longer have to computers. I was wondering if i could instead opt for a dedicated server that allowed the three of them access to the internet. Nothing more. Nothing less. Would it be cheaper to buy the parts for a server instead of three new laptops? What do they each need to have in order to be a client on the server? i.e screens-given, keyboard-given, a way to connect?-how? I know what I'm thinking of can be done and I'm willing to put in a lot of time and work. I just don't know where to start!

buying separate machines will be cheaper for home use and internet usage.
