Hello!

Seven years ago I posted a thread here on building a gaming PC for $1000. People helped a lot and I was able to do exactly that. In the years since, I've only swapped out the video card (2 years ago). However, my PC's definitely showing its age now, stuttering and slowing on modern games. As such, I'd like to upgrade it to run buttery smooth where it's having issues now (or at least as close as I can get). So first, here's my current setup:

CPU: Intel Core i5-3570K 3.4GHz Quad-Core Processor
CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus 76.8 CFM Sleeve Bearing CPU Cooler
Motherboard: MSI Z77A-G45 ATX LGA1155 Motherboard
Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory
Storage: Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive
Storage: Samsung 840 Series 120GB 2.5" Solid State Disk
Video Card: EVGA GeForce GTX 1080 DirectX 12 08G-P4-5186-KR 8GB 256-Bit GDDR5X PCI Express 3.0 HDCP Ready SLI Support Video Card
Case: Cooler Master HAF 912 ATX Mid Tower Case
Power Supply: XFX 550W 80 PLUS Bronze Certified ATX12V / EPS12V Power Supply

I'm pretty sure my current limiter is the CPU, since it seems to max out the most when I check it in Task Manager. Unfortunately, if I've read things correctly, the CPU socket on my motherboard is no longer supported, so I'll have to replace that too. So I'm mainly focused on replacing those with upgrades that will work with the rest of my parts. Also, maybe add another 8 GB of RAM to bring it up to 16 (I should be able to just add onto what I already have, right?)

I mostly use my PC for gaming, stuff like the new Mount and Blade, Rainbow Six: Siege and VR games. I'd like to spend around $600 or less if possible, though going over a little would be fine. If there are other parts that I should replace, I'm open to suggestions for those as well.

So, yeah. I hope that's enough info to get some help. Any help is appreciated!

DDR3 RAM is no longer compatible with current platforms, You will have to change that as well. To be honest, you can keep most of those parts and just change out the CPU, Cooler (if needed), Motherboard and Memory. I also added in a new PSU to be safe. Do you play at 1080p?

You can use the default cooler with the 3700x, but if you want to do heavy OC I suggest you get a better cooler, something like a Noctua or a Corsair H100i Pro. Also, the X570 motherboard gives better OCing option so you may want to consider that.

Had to take a 9600k instead of the 9700k which would have been comparable to the 3700x so that it stays within $600.

Okay, sweet, thanks for the speedy response! Shame about the RAM, but I kinda expected that. Yeah, I (think? not entirely sure) play at 1080. I'll probably go for the AMD package if it's slightly better.

For bang for buck, the AMD winds by a longshot. But for gaming, Intel edges out slightly but considering for the price of a 3700x you can only go for a 9600k I would go for the 3700x any day.
