CPU: AMD Athlon II X2 245 (I know, its an old one)
MOBO: ASUS M5A97 LE R2.0
RAM: 8GB
GPU: Radeon R9 270x

So I got this "gaming" pc as a gift for christmas it was around $250 used, it's pretty garbage, runs CS:GO at 30 fps on all low settings lol. I really want to upgrade the CPU but it has to be an am3+ socket, aswell as I am working on a tight budget of around $100 canadian. If anyone could give me some good CPU's to pair with this pc, that would be great.

Solution
You have the makings of a workable budget gaming computer. Put either a fast Phenom II X4 in there, like a 965, or the fastest FX 6xxx or 8xxx series CPU you can afford.

At 1080p you should be able to play quite a few games, including Fortnite, which is not bad.

Yeah, that GPU is pretty decent for mid range 1080p gaming, your CPU is the big bottleneck here, I have the similar performing Athlon II x2 250 and it runs a hang of a lot slower than the not much newer i3 3220 in my other PC.

As for CPU compatibility with your board, this motherboard supports up to 6 core Phenom CPU's (possible upgrade if you can find one in your budget) the FX lineup ( terrible CPU's and very slow, but faster than your current one) Older AM3 Opteron CPU's ( a server class type CPU like Intel Xeon's not recommended but still an option) and Semprons ( don't even consider a Sempron)

That sounds overpriced but it was a gift so it's a good idea to stop staring at it's mouth.

I recommend the Phenom II X4 965. https://www.ebay.com/p/AMD-Phenom-II-X4-965-3-4GHz-Quad-Core-HDZ965FBK4DGM-Processor/79634429 is a possibility.

Considering I've seen that GPU sell for 250 USD alone I don't find it that bad of a deal.

You mean an APU? I believe even a Ryzen 3 2200g APU and the cheapest motherboard that will work is going to be over 100 Canadian by quite a bit. Better off finding a used 4 or 6 core Phenom CPU and slotting it in until the budget is bigger.

Also, the R9 270x is faster than the cheapest Ryzen APU's anyways.

The thing is, i'm not old enough to get a job, so getting the funds to get a whole new pc would take over a year from holiday moneys. Doing chores is also not an option for me to get money because my parents don't give me an allowance or anyting.

Do you think this is a good deal for a phenom cpu along with the cooler?[/quotemsg]

Yes, it should work nicely, that is to say the CPU is on the supported list for CPU's. The page didn't list the model of CPU so all we have to go on is 6 core Phenom II, which I believe all are supported but I don't know.

Also, before changing out the CPU make sure you have the most current BIOS update so the new CPU will work properly.
