Hey guys =]. I have decided for my yearly tech upgrade ( ) I am going to update my Graphics Card. I have around a $100 limit. I currently have a Bfg 8400 gs 512mb. ( ). I do moderate gaming, and have come to the conclusion that my age old gfx card really hinders my experience. I am asking you. What card should I get ATI or NVIDIA? What series? My computer is quad core AMD. Oh, I use Windows 7!

Thank you!

If you dont know what one it is, then its not good. Whats current rating on the 12 volt rail? That determines what card you can support.

Right now, nVidia is not a good choice, especially at your budget. A 4670 is the safe bet and would be a large upgrade from your 8400GS. What resolution is the monitor you game on normally? It wont be able to play stuff on high at 1280x1024 but it should be able to handle medium, dont expect decent detail settings at 1920x1200 though.

Yeah. atm I have a crappy 400w power supply. But I know, before I get my gfx card I'll get a 750w+ from a reputable company.

This thread was only about GFX cards. So just disregard the PSU.

Get a 400-450W PSU from a reputable company and an ATI 5750.
Advantages:
1. Perfect card for moderate gaming even on current games with high details.
2. DX11 capability.
3. Low power consumption.

IMHO this combination is the best for you. I bet you will be very happy with the purchase.

IMO- This is your best bet for 100 or under.

Nvdia 9800 low power or energy efficient. XfX has two 9800,s one is the low power version and is 95.00.
These cards will get twice the framerates as you 8400. Its pretty much the same card as the gts250. Requires no extra power connectors and you can get by with a 400 watt psu. Most people with Dells, HP, etc run this card no problem with oem everything.

If you run with the (M$ofty) herd, then you must shod your paws with expensive RADON-Iron. They are priced like GOLD, create heat like a fusion reactor and stay in fashion as long as a womans hemline.

But, if you pounce-with-da-Penguin(LINuX), then a modest BFG_9800-gtx+ ( with 190.xx NV_driver) wil trounce the lot today ... trounce-da-lot tomorrow. At 1920x1200 I am crushing the ATI cards in Phoronix-test-suite graphics.
