I've been thinking of switching to Nvidia for a while now, but I've been wondering is there any advantages or disadvantages to Nvidia compared to AMD ?

IMHO Nvidia have much better drivers.

Better performance in video/image rendering
CUDA
Less noise and heat
AMD:
More stream processors
Better DirectCU
Sometimes it's just more powerful.

Stream Processors and CUDA core cannot be compared in an "Apples to Apples" numbers kind of way and Direct CU is an Asus cooler and ah heck all to do with AMD, I have Direct CU coolers on my Nvidia cards.
