Upgrading my gtx 480?

So yes I have a very old card and I was thinking of the best possible upgrade for better performance playing a game like Black Desert which I am getting about 40fps on medium settings at 1650x1280 resolution(yes my monitor is old too).

My specs are
intel i5 2500k
8g RAM
gtx 480

My motherboard does not allow me to overclock the CPU but I see that it is at about 60% usage with Black Desert playing.

Is the GTX 970 a good upgrade for the money? What kind of performance increase am i looking at for the money here?

If you are willing to spend that much then wait for the 1070 which has just been announced. It will supposedly be around $+50 and "faster than the Titan x". Though that may not be true in all aspects, it should be a lot faster than the 970.
